Purpose and Core Function

Sonic Air is a high-frequency enhancement plugin focused on adding clarity, brightness, and harmonic depth to your mix. Its streamlined interface allows for quick adjustments while offering flexibility for both subtle and more noticeable changes. The plugin provides a suite of tools to shape transients, boost air bands, and apply harmonic saturation with control.

The core processing includes an HF Exciter that enhances high-frequency content to add brightness and presence, with an adjustable cutoff frequency to target specific ranges. The adaptive shelving filter responds dynamically to incoming audio, ensuring smooth and natural high-frequency shaping. This combination allows you to open up a clean top end without harshness, making it suitable for a wide range of sources.

Harmonic Modes and Saturation

Five Harmonic Modes provide distinct saturation styles: Tube, Tape, Retro, Warm, and Inflator. Each mode adds harmonic content while maintaining the dynamics of your original signal. The Strength control adjusts the intensity of the exciter effect, allowing you to dial in anything from a subtle sheen to more aggressive processing.

The plugin also includes an internal dynamic enhancement technique that applies soft clipping to add harmonic distortion. This step adds warmth and character, making the mix sound more analog-like and musical. Integrated clipping control combines soft clipping, hard clipping, and soft limiting to prevent digital clipping and maintain pristine audio quality at high output levels.

Transient and Air Enhancement

Sonic Air automatically applies transient enhancement to high-frequency content, making percussive elements and other transient-heavy sounds more prominent without adding harshness. This internal feature ensures that your mix retains clarity and impact. The Mid Air and High Air controls provide dynamic enhancement for the mid and high-frequency ranges, bringing out details.

These controls adjust the intensity of the enhancement, allowing you to add air and clarity precisely where needed. The HF Start parameter sets the cutoff frequency for the HF Exciter, giving you precise control over which frequencies are affected. This combination of transient shaping and air enhancement is particularly useful for adding life to dull recordings or reinforcing presence in a mix.

Workflow and Practical Applications

Sonic Air is designed for quick, intuitive operation. The Listen Mode lets you solo the processed high-frequency content, helping you focus on fine-tuning your settings without being distracted by the full mix. This is especially useful for matching the enhancement to the source material or for surgical adjustments.

Practical applications include adding brightness to vocal tracks, bringing out the shimmer in cymbals, or adding presence to a full mix. The transient enhancement makes it ideal for drums and percussion, while the harmonic modes offer tonal coloring for musical warmth. Whether you need subtle air or aggressive brightness, Sonic Air provides the tools to shape your high end with precision.
