A stereo VCA compressor and limiter with two analog-inspired modes, sidechain routing, gate, and modern mix controls for versatile dynamics shaping.

Rave Generation Sonic Dynamics

Purpose and Tone

Sonic Dynamics delivers a flexible stereo compressor and limiter that pairs classic analog character with practical modern features. It offers two VCA emulation modes: Modern (Rev D), which uses a clean, accurate THAT2180-style VCA for low-noise and fast response, and Vintage (Rev C), which emulates a DBX2150-style VCA for a more colored, musical sound with added distortion and ripple-induced saturation.

The plugin models soft-knee compression, separate peak and RMS detection, sidechain gating, and stereo linking. A mix control and high-pass sidechain filter add contemporary convenience. This combination makes it suitable for vocals, drum buses, mix buses, and other sources where flexible, analog-style dynamics control is needed.

Key Capabilities

The compressor section provides controls for threshold, ratio, attack, release, knee, and make-up gain. A Limit mode uses a high ratio with fixed attack and release for fast, transparent limiting. The knee can be soft for smooth transitions or hard for abrupt response, and detection can be set to Peak or RMS.

A Lo Freq Relax high-pass filter cleans sub-bass before detection, using a cascaded 24 dB/oct filter controlled by a knob. This prevents deep bass hits from over-triggering compression, reducing pumping on bass-heavy tracks. The filter is disabled at its lowest setting and always applies to the selected detection source.

Workflow and Routing

The main inputs feed both the audio output and the internal sidechain detector. When an external sidechain is available and enabled, the auxiliary inputs serve as the detection source for both the compressor and gate, allowing ducking or key-controlled effects. The high-pass filter is applied to whatever source is used for detection.

By default, Sonic Dynamics is a true stereo processor with Stereo Link on, where one envelope from the louder channel drives both VCAs. With Link off, it operates in dual-mono, and each channel’s compressor and gate respond independently. This flexibility supports both stereo bus duties and individual channel processing.

Gate and Practical Use

After compression, a gate section on each channel uses threshold and rate controls. When the signal falls below the threshold, the gate opens, holds for a fixed time, then decays exponentially shut, modeled after the hardware’s circuit. This gate silences noise or bleed during quiet passages and follows the selected sidechain source.

Some controls are automatically disabled in specific modes, mirroring analog hardware behavior. In Limit mode, attack, release, and ratio are ignored, using fixed ultra-fast attack and musical release. In RMS mode, attack and release controls are bypassed for program-dependent timing. LED meters for gain reduction and output stay active in all modes for real-time feedback.

Key features

  • Two VCA emulation modes for clean or colored compression
  • Soft-knee compression with separate peak and RMS detection
  • Sidechain input for ducking and key-controlled effects
  • High-pass sidechain filter to reduce sub-bass triggering
  • Stereo link or dual-mono processing modes
  • Integrated gate/expander with hold and decay
  • Mix control for parallel compression

Best for

Best for producers and engineers seeking a versatile analog-style compressor for vocals, drum buses, or mix buses. Its dual modes cover clean and colored dynamics, while the sidechain and gate features suit creative ducking and noise control in bass-heavy tracks.
