Rave Generation Time Modulator — Free Download
A faithful emulation of a 1970s analog delay processor with dual BBD chips, compander circuitry, and a flexible LFO, suitable for flanging, chorus, echo, and cinematic sound design.

Purpose and Heritage
Time Modulator recreates a legendary 1970s analog delay unit known for its advanced time-based effects. The original hardware shaped hits by Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, and Queen, and was used for the Darth Vader voice in Star Wars. This plugin captures that distinct analog tone and intricate signal behavior.
It offers three function modes: Audio Delay for clean echo, Time Mod for flanging and modulation, and Phase Shift for quadrature-based phase effects. A six-preset system includes flange and delay presets that switch seamlessly with parameter interpolation, preserving the character of the classic unit while adding modern automation support.
Dual BBD Architecture
The core relies on a dual BBD design simulating the Reticon SAD1024 chip with 1024-stage characteristics. The ADL-70-D Dynamic module provides a variable primary delay, while the ADL-60-S Static module offers stable auxiliary timing. Voltage-controlled clock generation includes anti-aliasing and reconstruction for authentic behavior.
The signal path mirrors the original, including modified dbx 303 compander circuitry with linked compressor/expander operation. Custom VCA filters and RMS detector pre-emphasis circuits contribute to a high signal-to-noise ratio. This combination yields warm, organic delays and rich modulation without the noise of early hardware.
LFO and Modulation
A complete LFO section offers six waveforms: sine, square, saw, triangle, SSC, and random. The frequency range spans from slow to fast, with musical voltage control characteristics. Function mode-specific behavior and waveform shaping allow for creative modulation patterns, while dual-phase output adds authentic stereo delay modulation.
Time CV Limit and Overload LEDs provide visual monitoring of modulation extremes and input levels. The LFO can drive the delay times for shimmering flanges, throbbing choruses, or unpredictable random effects. This flexibility makes it suitable for both subtle movement and extreme sound design.
Workflow and Applications
In a mix, use Audio Delay mode for spacious echoes on vocals or instruments, with the static module adding a secondary slap. Time Mod mode excels at classic flanging on guitars, drums, or full mixes, while Phase Shift creates sweeping, psychedelic textures. The seamless preset switching allows for live automation of effect changes.
For cinematic work, the Darth Vader-style processing can be replicated on dialogue or voiceovers. The random waveform can generate evolving soundscapes, and the CV LEDs help prevent clipping. Whether adding depth to a track or crafting unique SFX, the Time Modulator serves as a versatile creative tool.
