Empirical Labs Arousor 3.2

Purpose and Heritage

The Arousor is a compressor plugin designed by Empirical Labs, the company behind the renowned Distressor hardware unit. It brings the characteristic ‘creamy’ sound and straightforward operation of their hardware compressors to digital audio workstations, answering years of requests from producers and engineers who wanted that signature compression in the box. The plugin focuses on delivering musical, easy-to-use compression that suits a wide range of sources.

This version, 3.2, adds native support for Apple Silicon processors and includes several bug fixes. It also supports preset copy and paste between Arousor and its lighter counterpart, Arousor LT, though internal fixed settings on the LT version remain unchanged. Two new presets, ‘Hogarth Voc2’ and ‘Evil Joes FuzzBass’, are included to get you started.

Key Capabilities

The plugin features an advanced detector sidechain with two bands of EQ: a high-pass filter and a parametric section. This lets you precisely choose where compression triggers in the frequency spectrum, so you can avoid losing low-end or target specific elements. The Rivet mode provides an extremely steep compression ratio, similar to the Distressor’s Nuke, ideal for aggressive gain reduction on room mics or other tracks.

Attack Modification (AtMod) allows you to slow down the initial attack slope, letting more transient through while still maintaining compression. This is useful for adding snap to snares or thump to bass. Additionally, a soft clipper knob adds vintage-style harmonic distortion, giving you control over total harmonic distortion from subtle to extreme without adjusting input levels.

Workflow and Controls

Setting up the Arousor is straightforward. You can adjust the sidechain EQ to tailor the trigger point, set the ratio, and dial in attack and release times. The AtMod knob fine-tunes the attack curve, while the soft clipper shapes saturation. The interface includes clickable LEDs for visual feedback, making it easy to monitor gain reduction and activity.

For practical use, start by setting the input level to achieve a consistent gain reduction, then tweak the sidechain to focus on specific frequencies. Use Rivet mode for dramatic effects, and combine AtMod with saturation to add character without losing punch. The preset copy/paste feature helps in transferring settings between sessions or to the LT version for lighter processing.

Practical Applications

The Arousor excels on drums, especially room mics, where Rivet mode can glue the sound and add intensity. On individual tracks like snare or electric bass, AtMod helps preserve transients while controlling dynamics. For vocals, the sidechain EQ allows you to avoid pumping by filtering out low frequencies, and the soft clipper can add warmth or grit.

Using the saturation and compression together, you can emulate the character of the Distressor on buses or individual tracks. The sidechain’s parametric band is particularly useful for de-essing or controlling overly resonant frequencies without losing compression on the main signal. The plugin’s ease-of-use makes it suitable for both mixing and tracking scenarios.
