Peking Opera Percussion — Free Download
A sampled collection of traditional Chinese opera percussion, featuring drums, gongs, cymbals, and bells with articulations, MIDI grooves, and two microphone positions.

Purpose and Scope
This virtual instrument recreates the percussion of Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera, along with other Chinese instruments used in contemporary music. It includes a large drum for solo or ensemble performance, several gongs and cymbals, and a replica of the ancient Bianzhong bell set. The library is sampled at high resolution with multiple velocity layers for detailed dynamics.
Aimed at composers and producers, it provides authentic Chinese percussion sounds for scoring film, television, games, or traditional music projects. The collection emphasizes realistic articulation and performance nuance, capturing both the cultural heritage and practical utility of these instruments.
Instrument Layers
The library organizes sounds into four categories: Jingda, Drum, Bell, and Cymbal/Gong. Jingda includes two opera percussion sets, one lower-pitched for calm scenes and one higher-pitched for action. Drum layers cover solo and ensemble performances, with multiple hit positions, stick and rim sounds, double or triple hits, and mute options.
Bell instruments include the Bianzhong with multiple rows and tonal variations, plus a smaller bell set. Cymbal and gong categories feature various sizes and pitches, including a small melodic gong set and a rack of ten gongs for excited atmospheres. Each instrument is sampled with both close and room microphones, adjustable via a dry/wet control.
Workflow and Performance
The interface offers unique screen layouts for most layers, showing the real instrument appearance and highlighting the active instrument during playback. Drum layers include roll crossfade, mapped to MIDI CC1, which helps create realistic crescendos. Built-in MIDI grooves are provided, including both traditional opera patterns and new compositions, with intros and endings.
Two microphone positions let you blend between a direct close sound and a more ambient room tone. This flexibility suits both detailed studio mixes and larger-than-life cinematic cues. The sampled articulations support expressive playing, from subtle mutes to powerful ensemble hits.
Practical Applications
This instrument is ideal for film and game scoring that needs authentic Chinese percussion, delivering both solo timbres and ensemble textures. The MIDI grooves can quickly generate realistic opera rhythms, which you can customize using the roll crossfade for dynamic swells. The various gong and cymbal types add color to tension scenes or transitions.
For contemporary music production, the drum sets and melodic gongs offer unique layering opportunities. The close/room mic blend lets you fit the percussion into a mix, from intimate to epic. Whether you need a single dramatic hit or complex rhythmic patterns, this library provides a practical toolkit for integrating Chinese opera percussion into your compositions.
