Virtual instruments and libraries

Galaxy X is a convolution synthesizer virtual instrument that processes over 15GB of recorded sources with thousands of impulse responses to create evolving, complex sounds for production.

Galaxy X

Concept and Core Technology

Galaxy X is a convolution synthesizer from Galaxy Instruments and Best Service. It combines two main elements: Source sounds and X-Files. Sources are exclusively recorded sample sets, and X-Files are impulse responses that shape, filter, reverse, and morph these sources. By convolving a source with an X-File, the instrument creates a hybrid sound that can be musical, rhythmic, textural, or entirely alien.

The instrument is designed as a complete production toolkit, offering over a thousand ready-to-play instrument layers across three categories: X-Keys for tonal playable sounds, X-FX for effects, and X-Loops for rhythmic and melodic loops. The source library includes around one thousand tonally playable instruments, over two thousand effect sounds, and more than five thousand loops, giving users an extensive palette for sound design.

The X-Eye Interface and Dynamic Control

The interface centers around the X-Eye, a visual indicator that shows the amount of convolution applied in real time. This amount is controlled dynamically via the modulation wheel or any assignable MIDI controller. Users can smoothly morph between the dry source sound and the fully convolved result while performing, making the effect part of the musical expression.

The signal path begins with three selectable sources that can be layered, then passes through a Pre-X section with distortion, groove/sequencer, EQ/filter, contour, and repeat modules. The X-Engine allows selection of X-Files with adjustable length, tuning, host sync, and reverse. Finally, a Post-X section adds panning, color, and a convolution-based reverb module, offering comprehensive sculpting at every stage.

Workflow and Sound Creation

Users can start with ready-made instrument layers for immediate use, then tweak or completely transform them. Creating new sounds involves layering up to three sources, routing them through the Pre-X effects, selecting an X-File, and adjusting the X-Factor with the modulation wheel. The X-File library includes hundreds of recordings such as instrument resonances, processed loops, room impulses, vintage tape delays, and reversed sounds.

The workflow supports both quick experimentation and deep sound design. The ability to change convolution amount live makes it ideal for performance. The interface is laid out in a logical left-to-right flow, with visual feedback, allowing intuitive navigation. Users can combine diverse material, such as a kalimba loop with a glass impact X-File, to produce complex hybrids that would be difficult to create with traditional synthesis.

Practical Applications and Genres

Galaxy X is suited for composers and producers working in film scoring, game audio, ambient, chillout, soundtrack, electronic music, dance, pop, progressive, and experimental genres. Its ability to generate evolving textures, rhythmic loops, and unique tonal instruments makes it a valuable tool for adding distinctive sonic color to a production.

For score work, the convolution engine can help create cinematic risers, drones, and hits. In electronic music, it can generate unusual percussive elements or morphing synth patches. Sound designers can use the thousands of X-Files to mutate any source into something new. The instrument encourages exploration, with the promise of ‘trillions of unheard sounds’ due to the sheer combination possibilities, making it a creative catalyst for any project seeking originality.
