Chris Hein Winds Compact — Free Download
Chris Hein Winds Compact is an orchestral woodwind library featuring flutes, clarinets, oboes, and bassoons with true legato, phase-aligned dynamic layers, and a flexible sound-shaping engine for realistic performances.

Essential Woodwinds Collection
Chris Hein Winds Compact delivers a practical selection of orchestral woodwinds based on the larger Winds Complete library. It includes the same instrument count—four transverse flutes, three clarinets, three oboes, and three bassoons—but focuses on the most common articulations and functions. The library is designed for composers who need high-quality woodwind sounds without the complexity of a vast articulation set.
The sampled instruments were performed by members of the renowned WDR Symphonic Orchestra and recorded with selected Neumann microphones. Dry close miking was an intentional choice, allowing the instruments to blend easily with other libraries. The musicians used headphone monitoring to play together naturally, resulting in expressive performances.
Phase-Aligned Dynamic Layers
All samples underwent a six-month phase-alignment process to ensure seamless crossfades between dynamic layers. Up to eight dynamic layers per articulation provide realistic volume transitions without tonal degradation. This meticulous editing allows for smooth swells and expressive phrasing, making the woodwinds responsive to nuanced MIDI control.
A unique ‘Note Head Designer’ feature addresses the challenge of matching short and long notes. For each sustain articulation, corresponding short variations can be triggered via controls or MIDI, ensuring the attack and note-end match the intended length. This avoids the artificial sound of random round-robin switches, giving the performer precise control over note character.
True Legato and Playability
True legato was a primary focus, with in-depth recording and editing to capture seamless transitions between notes. The library offers both realistic performance-based legato and additional artificial legato options for enhanced flexibility. Variable attacks per note further expand expressive control, allowing subtle or pronounced entrances.
Play aids include hot keys that switch articulations quickly, alternate note heads for visual reference, and MIDI remote capability via TouchOSC for touch-device control. These tools streamline live performance and studio work, letting the player focus on musicality rather than navigating complex interfaces.
Flexible Sound Shaping and Workflow
The library runs on Native Instruments’ Kontakt Player and features a tailored interface with extensive scripting. The dry recording allows for flexible placement in the stereo field, and dual convolution reverbs provide separate control over body and ambience. This enables users to craft environments from close and intimate to large concert halls.
The ability to adjust room sound independently makes the library highly variable and compatible with other orchestral libraries. It suits a wide range of applications, from classical pieces and film scores to pop productions with orchestral elements. The efficient articulation set keeps the workflow uncluttered while delivering superior sonic quality.
