Purpose and Core Approach

Drumagog 6 Platinum is a significant update to the long-standing drum replacement tool, rebuilt from the ground up for modern workflows. Its primary purpose is to replace or augment recorded drum hits with samples from its library, called GOGs. Unlike older versions that handled one drum at a time, the new Kit mode was designed to handle an entire drum kit from a single stereo drum bus, simplifying the setup process for full-drum replacement.

The plugin visualizes every detected hit as a marker on the waveform, making it easy to see what the software has found. A threshold line can be dragged down to reveal quiet ghost notes that might otherwise be missed. This visual approach aims to reduce the need for manual trigger editing, which was a common pain point in earlier versions.

Key Capabilities and Detection Modes

Drumagog 6 offers three operational modes to suit different tracking and mixing situations. Live mode is designed for real-time monitoring with minimal delay, letting a drummer hear the new sound immediately while playing. Drum mode, which looks ahead slightly, is the standard choice for mixing close-miked snare or kick, providing more accurate hit judgment and a timeline of all detected hits for later review.

Kit mode is the standout feature, allowing the plugin to automatically trigger off each separate drum within a stereo drum track. Each drum appears as its own lane on the trigger page and as a dedicated strip on the mix page, giving individual control over the whole kit.

Workflow and Editing Features

Editing detected hits is a central part of the workflow. Each marker’s height reflects the hit’s velocity, and markers can be dragged horizontally to adjust timing or vertically to change dynamics. If a hit was missed, double-clicking on the waveform adds it manually.

The MIDI page functions as a full piano roll, displaying each detected hit as a note. Users can edit notes as they would in a DAW, and the undo history is shared with the trigger page. The entire performance can be dragged out as a MIDI clip, or the plugin can output MIDI directly via its built-in output or a virtual MIDI port, making it compatible with various DAWs and drum libraries.

Practical Applications and Customization

The mix page provides two independent channel strips for each drum, one for pre-trigger processing and one for post-trigger. The pre-trigger section allows users to clean up the drum sound before detection, for example, applying a low cut on a snare to prevent the kick drum from triggering it.

Users can create custom GOGs by dropping a folder of samples, which the plugin automatically measures for velocity and trims to the start of the attack. Additional samples can be added from audio files or captured live from the track. The GOG editor enables rearranging samples into dynamic groups, adding room mics and articulations, and trimming or fading individual samples.

Key features

  • Kit mode replaces an entire kit from a stereo drum bus
  • Visual hit markers with draggable threshold and velocity
  • Similarity-based library sorting and tagging (e.g., Crack, Fat)
  • Pre and post trigger channel strips with EQ, transient shaper, reverb, and synth layer
  • Full MIDI piano roll with drag-out to DAW and virtual MIDI port
  • Custom GOG builder from audio files or folder of samples
  • Three detection modes: Live, Drum, and Kit

Best for

Best for producers and mixing engineers who need quick, accurate drum replacement in both live and studio contexts, especially when wanting to replace entire kits from one track with minimal manual trigger editing.
