WaveMachine Labs ReStem 2 Core — Free Download
A standalone drum stem separator app that splits mixed drum recordings into individual tracks for kick, snare, hi-hat, toms, ride, crash, and other, with visual feedback and export.

ReStem 2 Core Purpose
ReStem 2 Core is a standalone application designed solely for isolating drum components from a mixed drum track. It automatically identifies and separates the kick, snare, hi-hat, toms, ride, and crash, placing each on its own dedicated stem. A seventh stem labeled «other» captures any non-drum sounds present in the recording, such as vocals or stray noise.
The separation process can be performed in two ways: live, as the track plays within the app, or by rendering offline for maximum output quality. Users have access to two offline quality modes, with the top tier producing the finest results. The Core edition operates exclusively as a standalone program, meaning it cannot be embedded inside a digital audio workstation.
Key Capabilities and Interface
The app includes a real-time visual aid called the Separation Map. As the track plays, each drum appears as a cluster of stars that light up with every hit. The map’s layout provides spatial cues: deeper-sounding drums are positioned on the left, louder hits rise higher on the vertical axis, and wider-sounding drums produce broader clusters. This interactive visualization helps users quickly identify which stem corresponds to which drum in the mix.
Core’s primary functions are re-balancing, muting, and soloing each of the seven stems individually. This allows for adjustments to the relative volume of each drum component, isolating a single drum for focused listening, or silencing unwanted parts. Users can also export individual stems or a complete mixdown of the separated tracks, capturing the processed result for use in other software.
Workflow and Practical Use
A typical workflow involves importing a mixed drum recording into the standalone app, then choosing between a live playback pass or an offline render to generate the seven stems. After separation, the user can tweak the balance between stems using the re-balance and mute functions, guided by the Separation Map, before exporting the final stem files.
This tool is especially useful for remixing, where isolated drums are needed for creative processing, or for drum editing, such as fixing timing or replacing sounds. It also aids in analyzing a drum performance’s dynamics and spatial characteristics. Since Core lacks DAW integration, users must export stems and re-import them into their primary production environment for further work.
Practical Applications
ReStem 2 Core serves musicians, producers, and audio engineers who need to work with drum tracks in isolation. For a producer remixing an old recording, the ability to extract clean kick, snare, and cymbal stems simplifies the job. For a drummer wanting to practice along with a track, muting the original drums and exporting the rest can create a backing track.
It also assists in sound design, where individual drum hits can be resampled, and in educational contexts, where the visual map helps explain drum layering. Because the app is standalone, it is ideal for quick drum separation tasks without launching a full DAW. For those needing plugin-style integration, additional features are available in the Pro edition.
