Plugin Host and Routing

PatchWork acts as a universal plugin patchbay inside your DAW, hosting up to 64 VST, VST3, or Audio Unit plugins in a single instance. You can chain effects in series or create up to 8 independent parallel chains, each with its own activation, phase flip, solo, and gain controls. The routing matrix is visual and simple: add or remove rows and columns instead of dealing with virtual cables.

Up to 8 virtual instruments can be hosted in parallel and mixed within the plugin. Side-chain and auxiliary channels are supported, with input and output level meters for monitoring. Latency compensation and per-slot bypass ensure accurate operation. The plugin also supports VST Shell plugins and offers noiseless bypass when enabling or disabling effects.

Built-in Effects and Sound Design

PatchWork includes 30 built-in audio effects that add color to your custom chains. These include reverb, EQ, filters, pitch and frequency shifters, delays, modulation effects, compressor, gate, bit crusher, and waveshaper. These effects can be inserted in the same rack as third-party plugins, giving you a versatile palette for sound design without extra purchases.

You can use the built-in effects to process individual chains or the whole mix. The global Dry/Wet control (labeled «Mix») blends the processed signal with the original, useful for parallel compression or creative effect mixing. Combined with flexible routing, you can create complex multi-effects setups that would otherwise require multiple busses or external hardware.

Preset and Workflow Management

PatchWork lets you save entire routing and plugin configurations as presets, which can be recalled instantly. Each plugin slot stores its own settings and window position, so your layout is restored with the session or saved with the preset. This makes it easy to switch between different effect chains for different songs or mixing scenarios.

You can copy, cut, and paste plugins with their settings between slots, or drag and drop them. The fully featured preset manager and undo/redo integration streamline workflow. Presets can be shared across different DAWs, as long as they support the same plugin format. The user interface is customizable in size, with transparency and zoom options, and the plugin’s state can be copied between instances.

MIDI and Parameter Mapping

PatchWork provides flexible MIDI routing, allowing sub-plugins to communicate with each other or with the host application via virtual MIDI ports. You can connect instruments, effects, and controllers in creative ways, such as using a MIDI effect to trigger parameters in another plugin.

Parameters of hosted plugins can be mapped for automation or external control surfaces. This enables hands-on control of complex setups. MIDI Learn and full MIDI control support let you assign knobs or faders quickly. The plugin works as an effect or virtual instrument, and also as a standalone application, so you can use it without a DAW for live performance or sound design.
