Grainferno is a granular instrument that deconstructs audio files into microscopic fragments and rebuilds them into new textures, ranging from pristine tonal clouds to experimental digital noise. Its engine can generate grains at audio rates, where grains begin to act like oscillators, turning any sample into a playable synth voice. This allows you to create synth tones that stay in tune with your song, while retaining the spectral fingerprint of the original sound.

The instrument can generate grains from two independent source files and morph between them in real time using seven distinct modes. This capability enables the creation of hybrid instruments, seasick drones, and continuously shifting soundscapes that blend the character of each sample. Per-grain effects, including a grain filter, grain compressor, and grain blur, shape each grain at the moment of generation, allowing you to energize, destabilize, and transform your results beyond traditional synthesis.

Modulation and Control

Grainferno’s nearly every parameter is available for modulation, with three envelopes, three LFOs, and three random generators for evolving behavior. A drag-and-drop workflow lets you connect any modulation source to any destination, including cross-modulation between modulators themselves. You can stack as many assignments as you like, allowing the sound to continuously unfold with new variations on the source material.

You can also draw your own waveforms for LFOs, layer destinations, and create complex modulation routings. This deep control makes Grainferno a powerful platform for dynamic sound design, where the instrument’s behavior can change over time in intricate and unexpected ways, ensuring that no two moments sound the same.

Onboard Effects and Presets

Grainferno includes a suite of onboard effects designed for creative sound design, including ambient delay, reverb, analog-inspired modulation, and multimode saturation. The signal chain is reorderable, and nearly all effect parameters are available for modulation, integrating the effects as part of the instrument itself.

The plugin comes with hundreds of presets and factory samples from world-class sound designers, navigable via a Play View with four macro controls. Five template configurations in the bottom panel let you quickly explore core granular synthesis applications with any loaded sample, providing a fast start for inspiration.

Creative Workflows

Grainferno encourages experimentation with your existing sample library. You can drag and drop any audio file or a stem from your latest track to deconstruct and rebuild it into something entirely new. This is useful for starting new tracks, building unique signature sounds, or generating elevating textures for your songs from their existing elements.

Host-synced granulation syncs the grain rate and scan motion to the host tempo, enabling rhythmic resampling with a granular twist. This feature is particularly useful for producers who rely on loops and samples, adding a personal touch that helps you stand out from the crowd while keeping your music in time.
