Purpose and Concept

COATED-19 from BasicDrumCo is built around the idea that most virtual drum plugins are overloaded with sounds you’ll never use. The developers have stripped away the endless menus and presets, offering a single drum kit that was carefully chosen for its modern, versatile character.

The kit was recorded at Sonic Debris Studios, a facility designed specifically for rock drum recording. The room’s bright, even tone helps the drums sit well in a mix. Dan Korneff, a drummer and producer, selected the kit from his personal collection and performed the samples himself, aiming for a consistent yet naturally human feel.

Control and Customization

Every part of the instrument is tweakable from the Microphone Level Panel. You have independent control over each microphone, including the overheads and room mics. Beyond level, you can adjust pan, pitch, and the MIDI note assigned to each piece of the kit. This offers a high degree of personalization without the clutter of a massive library.

The microphone setup gives you both close-mic detail and ambient capture. Overheads and room mics are fully adjustable, so you can dial in the amount of space and air around the drums. The pitch control lets you tune drums to your song, and the MIDI mapping feature allows you to set up the kit to match your preferred playing style or an existing drum track.

Dual Perspectives and Parallel Processing

A standout feature is the ability to switch the stereo image between two perspectives: from behind the kit, as a drummer would hear it, or from out front, like an audience member. This is a simple one-button toggle that changes the panning of the microphones, and it can help you fit the drums better into your mix depending on the song’s arrangement.

The built-in parallel processing is another key element. Instead of generic utility compressors, this instrument includes models of gear used on professional rock recordings. The vintage SSL listen mic compressor and a tube emulation inductor EQ are programmed into the signal flow. This gives you a way to add punch and smack without external plugins, aiming for a polished, radio-ready drum sound.

COATED-19 is designed for a streamlined workflow in a 64-bit DAW that supports AAX, VST, or AU formats. You load the instrument, choose your perspective, and then tweak the mic levels to suit the mix.
