Virtual instruments and libraries

MonkeyC Rando is a creative sample-based instrument that generates unique musical combinations from your existing sample library, turning it into a playable keyboard instrument with randomization and sequencing tools.

MonkeyC Rando

Purpose

Rando is designed to spark creativity by taking the samples you already own and turning them into unexpected combinations. You point it to the folders on your computer where you store your samples, and with a single click it places them across a keyboard layout. This lets you play through your collection as if it were a playable instrument, discovering pairings you might never have considered.

The core idea is to break you out of your usual habits. Instead of hunting for the perfect sound, you can let Rando present you with options and then refine them. It is a tool for exploration and happy accidents, making the browsing of a large library feel like a game.

Key Capabilities

Rando includes a full set of sampling controls, including adjustable start and end points for the sample and its loop, with the waveform displayed for reference. Playback modes cover loop, gate, and one-shot (trigger) behavior. Samples are automatically matched to the key of your track and times to your tempo by default, while an ADSR envelope shapes each sound.

A ‘Life’ control adds subtle analog-style variation to each playback, making repeats feel less static. You can set playback to chromatic mode and use mono, poly, or legato glide for portamento. Velocity sensitivity, individual gain, and per-sample transposition are all available.

Workflow

In a typical session, you would start by pointing Rando to your sample folders. You then use the search filters to narrow the material by type, category, loop or one-shot, or by text. Hitting the ‘Rando’ button populates the keyboard, and you can play, lock a sample you like, and re-randomize the rest to keep the flow going.

The built-in sequencer gives you note control: you can program up to 64 steps, each with its own note, velocity, and length. The sequencer can randomize intelligently, and a ‘Spaces’ control lets you introduce rests, which is also assigned to the mod wheel for real-time performance. This setup is handy for generating melodic or rhythmic ideas that you can later export or recreate in your main DAW.

Practical Applications

Rando is suited for sound design sessions, where you want to audition combinations of textures across a keyboard, or for sketching out a drum pattern by triggering one-shots. Because it can randomize both the sample layout and the sequencer pattern, it is also a good tool for generating rhythmic variations or surprise fills.

The lock-and-replace approach is ideal for iterative searching: you can keep a hi-hat you love, and let Rando swap the kick that is standalone. The similarity search is useful when a track calls for a complementary sound, but you want to avoid cloning your go-to library. Overall, Rando is a practical sidekick for any producer who wants to move faster and think outside the file browser.
