Purpose and Sound Design

RootBass TANG is a sample-based instrument focused on electro-mechanical bass sounds. Its core content comes from multi-sampled analog synthesizer tones, combined with physical actuators, noise artifacts, and amp/cabinet impulses. The design philosophy centers on making noise an essential part of the instrument’s character, moving beyond simple pitch and filter control to capture the feel of aged circuits and mechanical parts.

The sample library includes root and fifth variants for each note, giving you solid foundational material for bass lines and arpeggios. You can independently select key-down and key-up articulations, each with its own decay, filter, tuning, and velocity sensitivity controls. This lets you shape the attack and release character separately, adding realism or creative flair to every note.

Key Capabilities

The instrument offers a range of noise textures, including tape hiss, flutter, amplifier hum, vinyl crackle, VHS tracking, and electromagnetic noise, alongside radio noise options. These can be blended with the synth samples and controlled via volume, envelope, filtering, and velocity sensitivity. Each element—bass, noise, articulations—can be bypassed individually, giving you flexibility to build your sound from the ground up.

Polyphonic and monophonic modes are available, along with a classic legato mode for smoother transitions. The arpeggiator is designed to evoke vintage electronica, with filtering, noise modeling, and subtle modulation that mimic fluctuating voltages and scratchy potentiometers. A humanization feature adds note-by-note variation in volume, pitch, and filtering for a more organic performance.

Effects and Mixing Workflow

RootBass TANG includes a tape echo effect that pairs with classic modulations like rotator, phaser, flanger, and chorus to color the bass tone. Three output mix types define the amplifier character: overdrive with an amp/cabinet impulse, a classic tube amp, and a classic UK guitar amp. This lets you switch between gritty, warm, or British-flavored tones quickly.

Tape saturation and compression add warmth and body to the sound, while convolution reverb impulses provide both mono and stereo spaces. The impulse responses include 124 custom IRs for amp cabinets and reverbs, giving you a wide palette of room and speaker simulations. This integration of effects is designed to make the instrument feel solid, real, and mechanically alive.

Practical Applications

RootBass TANG is suited for music production where distinctive bass and lead sounds are needed, such as electronic genres, synthwave, or soundtrack work. The root and fifth focus makes it easy to craft driving bass lines, while the bright arpeggiator and intense leads fit energetic tracks. The mechanical noise textures add character that stands out in sparse mixes.

For songwriting, the instrument’s playable articulations and noise blending allow you to create evolving textures without external processing. The three amp outputs let you match a track’s existing guitar or synth tone. The humanization feature is especially useful for programmed parts, adding a human touch that works well in both live performance and studio arrangements.

Key features

  • Multi-sampled analog synth bass with root and fifth variants
  • Independent key-down and key-up articulations with decay, filter, tuning, and velocity control
  • Sixteen noise textures including tape hiss, vinyl crackle, and electromagnetic noise
  • Poly, mono, and legato modes with per-element bypass
  • Tape echo and modulation effects (rotator, phaser, flanger, chorus)
  • Three amp models: overdrive with impulse, tube, and UK guitar
  • 124 convolution impulse responses for cabinets and reverbs

Best for

Best for producers and sound designers who want vintage analog bass and lead sounds with mechanical noise character, particularly in electronic music, synthwave, and soundtrack contexts. Its arpeggiator and humanization features make it a strong choice for creating rhythmic, evolving patterns.
