Lost Soul is a virtual instrument dedicated to the Xiao, a traditional Chinese end-blown bamboo flute, specifically the Dongxiao variant. Known for its grave, low sound, the Xiao is often used in ceremonial or ritual contexts and contemporary Chinese fantasy music. This library captures its characteristic tone and allows for expressive performances.

The sound engine is built on samples recorded with five microphones placed at different positions, which are then mixed down into four adjustable channels (Yin, Yang, and a far stereo pair). This ‘Adjustable Sound Field’ lets you shape the spatial and reverberant character to suit your mix, from a close, dry tone to a distant, ambient one.

Performance Articulations

Lost Soul offers a rich set of Xiao techniques that are triggered via the instrument’s UI or MIDI controls. These include attacks, mordents, finger pops, trills, flutters, vibrato, staccato, and glissandi, many of which were recorded as real performances. The ‘Abundant Sound Effects’ feature compiles eight techniques covering traditional, cinematic, and Chinese ancient style playing, preserving the flute’s expressive potential.

Legato is handled through a dedicated engine that uses recordings of transitions between notes at three speeds, plus special styles like ‘regular’, ‘popping’, and ‘wuxia’ legato. To avoid phase issues during transitions, the instrument uses a ‘Spectrum Fusion Legato’ technology that blends samples in the frequency domain when needed, ensuring smooth and realistic connections between played notes.

Expression and Effects

Realistic expression is a key feature: the instrument uses freely controllable, real-recorded expressions that respond to MIDI CC, allowing for subtle tone changes and dynamic shaping like a live player. The glissando engine uses two recorded speeds and sample synthesis to permit glissandi at any speed you like, while the vibrato engine is an LFO-based system built on real samples for a natural, adjustable vibrato.

An integrated effect rack includes a compressor, EQ, chorus, and ping-pong delay, letting you shape the sound further. Additionally, a convolution reverb is included with impulse responses captured at famous Chinese landmarks such as the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army site, enabling you to place the Xiao in large, reverberant spaces.

Workflow and Patterns

The instrument provides a pattern library with a range of presets that you can use to quickly generate phrases or ideas. You can also drag MIDI clips into the library to save your own patterns, making it a practical tool for composers who want to build up parts or experiment with rhythmic flute phrases.

The self-developed sampling engine includes disk buffer streaming and sample compression for efficient performance, and a feature called sound fusion for blending samples. This is well suited for composers working on Chinese-inspired scores, film or game music, and any project needing an expressive solo wind instrument with a traditional character.
