Authentic Hulusi Recreation

World in Gourd faithfully recreates the hulusi, a southern Chinese clarinet-like instrument favored by the Dai, Yi, and Miao peoples. Its bamboo tube and gourd resonator produce a sweet sound used for romantic and lyrical music. This virtual instrument captures the hulusi’s rich performance vocabulary, including mordents, trills, flutter-tonguing, staccato, glissando, and finger-popping effects.

These articulations are directly playable and triggerable within the software, giving you hands-on control over the instrument’s expressive range. The included sampling engine streams audio efficiently and supports sound fusion, while a dedicated vibrato engine built from real samples makes vibrato both realistic and adjustable. These elements work together to provide a versatile tool for authentic hulusi performance.

Flexible Sound Shaping

A standout feature is the adjustable sound field. The instrument was recorded with five microphones at different positions to capture spatial and reverb characteristics. These were mixed down to four channels—Yin, Yang, and far stereo—whose volumes you can independently adjust for varied tones.

An built-in effects rack includes a compressor, equalizer, chorus, and ping-pong delay for further shaping. For ambience, a convolution reverb lets you simulate playing in Chinese heritage sites such as the Great Wall or the Terracotta Army location, using recorded impulse responses from those places.

Expressive Performance Controls

Realistic expression is a key focus. World in Gourd includes recorded expressions that you control via MIDI CC, allowing dynamic tone shifts that mimic a live player. Glissando is implemented with real samples at three speeds and a synthesis technique, so you can adjust gliss speed freely for smooth slides.

Legato is handled with recorded transitions at two speeds, plus specialized types like regular, fast, and popping legato. The proprietary ‘spectrum fusion legato’ technology blends samples in the frequency domain when needed, avoiding phase cancellation common with cross-fades. This ensures smooth, natural connections between notes.

Instruments, Patterns, and Workflow

You can switch between bass, alto, or treble hulusi tunings, and the two harmony tubes’ sounds are recorded as triggerable samples. This flexibility suits both solo melodies and richer arrangements. The pattern library offers a variety of presets that you can use or customize.

You can drag MIDI clips into the library to save your own patterns for reuse. For music production, World in Gourd fits well into tracks requiring authentic Chinese colors, from film scoring to world music and pop. Its direct articulation triggers and CC controls streamline composing expressive melodic lines without external keyswitches.
