Three Body Tech Phoenix Scream — Free Download
A detailed virtual instrument of the Chinese suona, capturing its expressive range with multiple articulations, a bass companion, and adjustable spatial controls.

Purpose and Origins
Phoenix Scream is a virtual instrument dedicated to the suona, a Chinese double-reed horn with roots in Central Asia. Its bulrush reed produces a metallic, high-frequency-rich tone. The instrument excels in conveying extreme emotions and is traditionally used in weddings and burials. In contemporary composition, it often appears in majestic or heroic passages.
The suona also mimics real-world sounds like birdsong, monkey cries, and frog croaks. This virtual instrument includes such expressive reproductions. To support harmonic writing, Phoenix Scream covers the most common pitch range, while a bass variant called Phoenix Growl is bundled with the purchase, extending the ensemble’s depth.
Key Capabilities
The instrument samples were recorded with five microphones at different positions, mixed into four channels: Yin, Yang, and far stereo. You can adjust these channel volumes in the software to shape the tone and spatial character, from intimate to distant.
Performances include mordent, finger pole popping, trill, flutter, vibrato, staccato, and glissando, all triggerable within Phoenix Scream. Real-recorded expressions respond to MIDI CC for dynamic tone changes. Glissando uses three recorded speeds with sample synthesis for smooth, variable-speed slides. A sample-based LFO engine offers realistic yet adjustable vibrato.
Workflow and Integration
The built-in sampling engine leverages disk buffering and compression for efficient streaming, plus a sound fusion feature. Legato transitions were recorded at three speeds and are applied based on playing speed, including «popping» and «flutter» legato specific to suona. A patented spectrum fusion technique blends legato samples in the frequency domain to avoid phase cancellation.
A convolution reverb includes impulse responses recorded at Chinese landmarks like the Great Wall and Terracotta Army site. An effect rack adds compressor, EQ, chorus, and ping-pong delay. A pattern library offers preset patterns and allows you to drag in your own MIDI clips for quick arrangement ideas.
Practical Applications
Phoenix Scream suits composers needing authentic suona for film scores, especially for dramatic or historic scenes. Its expressive controls make it ideal for solo passages that mimic a live performer. The included bass variant enables richer orchestration without additional tools.
For experimental music, the sound effect articulations—including bird and animal imitations—add unique colors. The adjustable sound field and convolution reverb help place the instrument in realistic spaces, while the effect rack and pattern library support quick sketching and sound design. Use it for everything from traditional Chinese pieces to modern cinematic works.
