Origin and Character

The Bowed Bucket is a hybrid instrument created from a plastic bucket, a wooden beam, bass tuners, and cello strings. Strings pass through holes in the bucket, using its bottom as a bridge, with a wooden neck stretched upward. It is played by bowing, plucking, and striking with drumsticks, captured in a close, dry setting.

The bowed sound is clean and rich, with a beefy low end and a growl similar to an electric cello but with a raw, unique body. Percussion hits yield bright, plastic bucket drum tones. The source material was also manipulated into atmospheric pads and ambiences, expanding the instrument’s creative range.

Sound Design and Articulations

The library includes sustained, staccato, and percussion articulations, captured from both inside and outside the bucket. It also provides a variety of playable lead, pad, ambient drone, and FX presets, offering a spectrum of tonal options beyond the core bowed and percussive sounds.

Each articulation responds to performance dynamics, and the built-in controls allow for detailed shaping. The included custom FX presets further transform the raw sounds into evolving textures, making it suitable for both melodic lines and soundscapes.

Interface and Modulation

The Kontakt interface offers a suite of sound-shaping controls, including swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, pitch, articulation switching, cross-fading, and layering. An adaptable LFO system allows modulation with selectable shapes, targets, speed, intensity, tempo sync, and fade-in time.

A filter section includes low-pass, high-pass, and FX filters with assignable modulation sources like velocity, mod wheel, expression, after-touch, key position, and step sequencer control. A customizable arpeggiator provides velocity table and control over direction, timing, swing, randomization, and duration, along with a key and scale lock system for constrained melodic play.

FX Rack and Workflow

The interface includes a modular FX rack with multiple DSP effect modules—phaser, flanger, delay, distortion, amp and cab simulators, compressors, EQ, rotator, and more—assignable to slots in any order. The reverb module features a convolution reverb with a large collection of rooms, halls, chambers, and outdoor environments, plus additional custom impulses.

Factory FX rack chain presets are included. This open-format Kontakt library requires the full retail version of Kontakt; the free Kontakt Player runs it only in limited demo mode. The sample directories are unlocked for use in other wav-compatible software, and the library can be loaded via the File browser tab.
