Purpose and Concept

Cacophony is a large collection of live concert hall performance sound effects, room tones, crowd reactions, orchestral tuning drones, and incidental sounds. It aims to fill the sonic gaps in modern music—the ambient details that make live performances feel real. This library provides the ‘ghost of the place’ through audience murmurs, applause, and players warming up.

These elements are useful for sound design across music, video games, movies, VR, television, and apps. They can simulate the environment of a live performance, adding authenticity and depth. The source material was recorded over many years with orchestras and ensembles, offering a deep and authentic collection of acoustic spaces and human performance nuances.

Key Capabilities and Interface

The Kontakt interface includes a suite of automation-ready sound-shaping controls. Users have control over swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filter, pitch, and articulation switching. Cross-fading and layering allow for complex sound design. An adaptable LFO system offers selectable shapes, modulation targets, speed, intensity, tempo-syncing, and fade-in time.

You can apply one of many low-pass, high-pass, or FX filters, with assignable modulation targets like velocity, mod wheel, expression, after-touch, and key position. A customizable arpeggiator provides a velocity table and control over direction, timing, swing, randomization, and duration. A key and scale lock system constrains notes to common scales for easy melodic work.

Effects and Presets

The interface includes a modular FX rack panel with many DSP effect modules. You can assign these in any order across multiple slots, including phaser, flanger, delay, distortion, amp and cab simulators, compressors, EQ, and rotator. The reverb effect uses convolution reverb impulses, including rooms, halls, chambers, and outdoor environments, plus additional custom FX impulses.

There are also twenty sound-designed custom FX presets and a bank of FX rack chain factory presets to get started. These provide creative options for transforming the raw source material. The library includes ambient patches created from the source content, offering ready-to-use ambient textures.

Workflow and Applications

For composers, Cacophony can add realistic audience and hall sounds to mockups or live recordings. Sound designers can use the tuning cacophonies and incidental sounds to create transitions or texture layers. Game developers can simulate concert venues with crowd reactions and room tones. The unlocked Kontakt presets and wav samples allow user customization in other software. You can import the library into Kontakt’s Quickload window for easy navigation. This flexibility supports various workflows, from direct sample use to deep sound design.
