Cosmic Hand Pans — Free Download
Cosmic Hand Pans is a Kontakt Player virtual instrument collection featuring three deeply sampled steel handpans, including a traditional D minor instrument and two unique hybrids, offering a modular sound-shaping interface.

Overview
Cosmic Hand Pans captures the warm, ethereal character of a traditional D minor steel handpan, recorded by Soundiron with fingerpads, fingertips, soft rubber mallets, and jazz brushes to provide varied articulations. This familiar instrument is complemented by two innovative hybrids crafted by Grahm Doe of Hapi Drum, blending handpan and tongue drum design.
A prototype fusion offers a brash, plucky tone with chaotic overtones, playable with rubber mallets or metal rods for aggressive performances. The signature hybrid combines finger dimples on the face with tuned tongue tines on the belly, each side producing a distinct yet complementary timbre. The collection provides three sonic worlds, from mellow resonance to percussive metallic textures.
Key Capabilities
The instrument includes a multi-layered interface that allows mixing, layering, retuning, and customizing each sound. A suite of controls covers swell, attack, release, offset, vibrato, filtering, and pitch adjustment. An adaptable LFO system provides modulation targeting, speed, intensity, tempo-syncing, and fade-in, while a filter section offers a choice of low-pass, high-pass, and FX filters with assignable modulation sources.
A customizable arpeggiator includes velocity response, direction, timing, swing, and randomization. A key and scale lock system constrains notes to common scales for easy composition. The modular FX rack presents numerous DSP effect modules, assignable to multiple slots in any order, including reverbs with a broad selection of convolution impulses for varied acoustic environments.
Workflow and Interface
The user interface is designed for intuitive navigation, with automation-ready controls that integrate smoothly into a digital audio workstation. The visual layout provides immediate access to articulation switching, cross-fading, and layering, allowing for dynamic performance changes. The arpeggiator’s velocity table and step-sequencer control add rhythmic complexity to melodic lines.
The key and scale lock system simplifies live performance and composition by pre-defining playable notes. Preset FX chain configurations offer starting points, while the flexible routing enables custom signal chains. The library loads within Kontakt’s frame, making it straightforward to adjust parameters in real-time.
Practical Applications
Cosmic Hand Pans is suited for ambient music, film scores, and sound design where textured metallic and percussive elements flourish. The traditional handpan’s ghostly resonance fits meditative or atmospheric tracks, while the hybrids add edge to percussion-heavy arrangements. The variety of mallets and brushes supports both gentle melodic work and aggressive rhythmic play.
The modular arpeggiator and scale lock aid in generating evolving patterns, and the reverb impulses can place sounds in intimate rooms or vast halls. The library can be used in Kontakt Player, Komplete Kontrol, and S-Series keyboards with NKS support. It is compatible with the Kontakt Libraries browser and requires online registration.
