Ensoniq ESQ-1

Faithful Recreation

Cherry Audio’s ESQ-1 is a virtual instrument that captures the sound and behavior of the 1986 Ensoniq ESQ-1, a hybrid digital-analog synthesizer. It uses the original 32 waveforms from the hardware, licensed from Creative Technology, which include basic waveforms, noise, samples, additive, and band-limited categories. This provides the raw material for the complex and evolving textures characteristic of the original.

The analog filter, based on the Curtis CEM3379 chip, is precisely modeled to reproduce the resonant low-pass character. It also offers expanded filter options, including high-pass and band-pass modes. The interface is designed for clarity, with separate sections for play, editing, modulation, envelopes, and sequencing, making the synthesis architecture more accessible than the original hardware’s cramped display and buttons.

Enhanced Sound Engine

Each voice includes three digital oscillators with sync and amplitude modulation for adding harmonics and metallic timbres. The instrument uses a stereo dual-layer structure, allowing two independent layers to be played simultaneously, either split across the keyboard or stacked. Each layer contains its own synthesis settings, filters, envelopes, LFOs, sequencing, and effects, enabling complex layered and split performances.

A comprehensive modulation matrix provides four slots with many sources and destinations, including options for MPE and aftertouch. Three LFOs per layer offer tempo sync and multiple waveform choices. Four multi-stage envelopes with velocity control shape the sound. Voice modes include polyphonic, unison, monophonic, and MPE, with portamento and detune for expressive playing.

Performance and Workflow

Integrated per-layer arpeggiators and programmable polyphonic step sequencers provide rhythmic and melodic pattern generation. These can be synced to the host tempo and transposed, with humanize settings to add natural variation. Pattern macros allow dynamic control over sequences, expanding creative possibilities beyond the original hardware.

SysEx compatibility enables direct import and export of patches from the physical ESQ-1 via MIDI, or drag-and-drop file transfer. This allows users to transfer their classic sounds to the software and share new ones back to hardware. The interface includes a focus zoom feature and global controls for effects and stereo width, enhancing the editing experience.

Effects and Integration

The instrument includes three independent effects chains per layer, each with a suite of studio-quality effects. These include reverbs, delays, modulation effects, distortion, and equalizers. Each chain can be customized, saved, and shared with other Cherry Audio synthesizers, providing a consistent and flexible effects workflow.

As a standalone application or plug-in, it supports full MIDI control and DAW automation, with user-assignable MIDI mapping. An oversampling control is user-adjustable for different situations. The instrument comes with a substantial preset library that includes original factory patches and new sounds, providing a broad sonic palette for immediate use.
