IronAxe is a physical modeling electric guitar virtual instrument with real-time string, pickup, and performance simulation, plus integrated effects, amp, and cabinet modeling.

Core Physical Modeling Technology
IronAxe is a high-end physical modeling instrument that simulates the electric guitar by modeling the physics of its acoustic and electronic components rather than using samples. The core technology involves the interaction between the instrument model, the performer model, and unpredictability simulation. All six strings, pickups, and plectrum or finger excitation are physically simulated, including realistic micro-imperfections.
This approach enables true-to-life articulations and playability, with smooth dynamics and no velocity layers. The instrument loads quickly and has a small memory footprint, making it a practical alternative to large sample libraries. It is designed for real-time use on modern CPUs, allowing polyphonic performance and multi-instance setups.
Building the Guitar and Controlling Performance
IronAxe allows deep customization of the virtual guitar. You can choose a solid-body model with two or three pickups, select pickup types such as single-coil, humbucker, or steel plate, and place them in the body. You can also set the plectrum hardness or use finger plucking at any point along a string, and adjust string material and tension for each of the six strings.
Performance is controlled via a standard MIDI keyboard or a natively supported MIDI guitar. The Performer Engine enables real-time techniques like palm muting, tapping harmonics, and strumming. The KeyPerformer Engine helps create strums, phrases, and riffs, while the StringsToucher Engine allows individual string manipulation for arpeggios. Full MIDI CC mapping is provided.
Integrated Effects and Amplification
IronAxe includes a complete effects and amplification chain, letting you craft guitar tones without external hardware or software. It features a master compressor and equalizer, plus four insert effect slots containing ten analog-modeled stompboxes. An amp and cabinet simulation is included with six legendary cabinets.
These integrated tools cover the full signal path from the guitar model to the final output. The effects are designed for advanced sound design, offering creative flexibility. The combination of physical modeling and this integrated setup makes IronAxe a self-contained solution for producing realistic electric guitar tracks in a wide range of musical styles.
Workflow and Practical Applications
In a typical workflow, you start by selecting a guitar model and configuring pickups and string parameters to match the desired tone. Then, you can perform using a MIDI keyboard or guitar, taking advantage of the performance engines for realistic articulation. Use the effects and amp section to shape the sound further, and map MIDI CC for hands-on control during mixing.
IronAxe is suitable for producers and composers who need authentic guitar parts without recording a real guitarist. It excels in genres like rock, blues, and pop, where expressive picking and strumming are essential. The physical modeling ensures that performances feel alive and responsive, making it ideal for both studio production and live use with a MIDI guitar.
