Unearthed Sampling Antique Metal Percussion

Origin and Character

Antique Metal Percussion derives its sound from lightly striking a curated collection of antique metal objects, each with its own distinct voice. Sourced items include a turn-of-the-century copper fire extinguisher, a WWII ammunition box, a decommissioned hand grenade, a seaside lantern, an iron headboard, and a library book cart. Because some of these objects are one-of-a-kind, the resulting timbres are unlikely to be replicated elsewhere.

The library captures clean percussive hits, scrapes, and reversed sounds, but also ventures into darker territory with atonal pads, tension builders, and FX patches. This focus on unusual artifacts gives the library a raw, industrial, and sometimes eerie character, suited for genres requiring metallic atmospheres or horror-tinged soundscapes.

Key Sampled Instruments

Every antique object was sampled in detail, with multiple dynamic layers and round-robin variations per hit to reduce machine-gun effect in sequences. The main hits are complemented by extensive reversal sounds and long tension builders, derived from the same sessions, which are explicitly noted as useful for horror or avant-garde material.

Additionally, the library includes atonal looping pads built from the artifacts, as well as grisly scrapes and FX patches. A master patch is provided for each instrument, which acts as a hub for accessing and tweaking the sounds.

Scripted Control and Interface

The included GUI focuses on practical sound shaping, allowing adjustment of attack, release, pitch, and low, mid, and high EQ bands per patch. A toggleable convolution reverb offers custom impulse responses for spatial placement.

An arpeggiator is built in, useful for rhythmic patterning. The interface is designed for ease of use, encouraging experimentation without deep menu diving.

Workflow and Applications

For media composers, the library excels at cinematic metal impacts, horror textures, and industrial percussion. The round-robin hits and arpeggiator make it simple to create rhythmic beds, while the reversal and tension patches serve as risers and stingers.

In sound design, the scrapes and FX patches provide organic metallic detail for transitions or foley. The EQ and reverb controls allow quick tailoring to fit a mix, from dry and close to ambient and cavernous.
