Super Audio Cart

Purpose and Scope

Super Audio Cart Complete is a sample-based virtual instrument that faithfully reproduces the sonic capabilities of fifteen classic gaming systems and home computers from the 1970s through the early 1990s. It captures the raw output of iconic sound chips from both consoles and computers, including the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Atari 2600, Sega Genesis, Master System, Commodore 64, Amiga, and several others.

The instrument is built on a meticulously recorded sample bank that includes thousands of individual samples, edited and looped to preserve the character of the original hardware. The included custom Kontakt Player engine allows users to blend and manipulate multiple sound sources simultaneously.

Key Capabilities

The engine supports four independent sound source layers, enabling users to stack different chip sounds for complex patches. An integrated browser helps navigate the vast sound source library, which contains over a thousand distinct sources. The instrument offers more than a dozen filter models, ranging from classic analog-style filters to modern options, allowing for extensive tonal shaping.

A distinctive feature is the inclusion of five FX racks, each with eight modules, providing a wide range of effects such as delay, reverb, and distortion. The custom SNESVERB reverb simulates the signature sound of the SNES’s audio processing. A poly arpeggiator, gate, and sequencer add rhythmic and melodic movement, while a 64-slot modulation matrix enables advanced routing of LFOs, envelopes, and other modulators to virtually any parameter.

Workflow and Integration

Super Audio Cart Complete is designed to integrate seamlessly into modern DAW-based production workflows. It runs within Native Instruments’ Kontakt Player, which is free to download, making it accessible to a broad range of users. Full NKS compatibility allows for deep integration with Komplete Kontrol keyboards and Maschine hardware, enabling hands-on control and easy preset browsing.

The instrument provides a large collection of factory snapshots that serve as starting points for various genres, from classic chiptune to cinematic score. Users can quickly audition and select patches, then modify them using the intuitive interface. The sound source browser and layer controls make it straightforward to design custom sounds. For composers, the arpeggiator and sequencer can generate complex patterns, while the mod matrix allows for dynamic, evolving textures.

Practical Applications

This instrument is ideal for producing music for video games, particularly indie titles that draw on retro aesthetics. It also serves as a rich resource for chiptune artists who want to move beyond simple emulation and explore new soundscapes. Additionally, producers in electronic music genres, such as synthwave, lo-fi, and future bass, can use the chip sounds as a distinctive sonic layer within their tracks.

The detailed sampling and powerful engine allow for realistic recreations of classic game music, making it useful for remix projects or sound alike productions. The flexibility of the mod matrix and effects enables users to create entirely new sounds that do not exist on the original hardware, expanding creative possibilities.
