Drop Pad 2 is a drag-and-drop sample instrument for Kontakt, developed by Soundtrax and Sub51. It is built around four sample pads that each hold a custom audio file. The main interface provides an XY pad for each of the four slots, allowing you to blend and morph between the sources in real time. This creates layered, evolving textures that shift organically as you move the cursor.

The instrument uses Kontakt’s MIR technology to detect tonal material during import and automatically adjust the pitch of the audio file, simplifying the process of matching samples to your project’s key. You can also edit each sample individually, with controls for pitch, envelope, pan, playback direction, loop, and sample start.

Key Capabilities

Drop Pad 2 includes a modulation section with three filters—low-pass, peak, and high-pass—each assignable to one or more pads. Each filter can be modulated by LFOs with selectable shapes, affecting the X and Y parameters of the pad cursor during playback. Independent pan and pitch modulation are also available, with a choice of waveforms. Nine MOD setups can be stored and recalled via the built-in preset system.

The effects section offers seven global effects: Reverb, Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Overdrive, Compressor, and Delay. A dedicated FX Warp pad lets you assign X and Y axes to any effect parameter, with adjustable modulation rate, shape, and tempo-synced speed. A simple EQ provides further tone shaping. Complete FX setups, including all effect and EQ settings, can be saved and recalled instantly, and the entire instrument can be automated.

Workflow and Integration

Drop Pad 2 is designed to integrate smoothly into your production workflow. The four sample slots can be filled with your own audio files or material from the included library. You can drag and drop samples directly onto each pad, and the instrument automatically adjusts pitch for tonal content. The XY morphing movements can be recorded and exported or imported from disk, allowing you to re-use complex modulation sequences across projects.
