Circuit-Accurate Core

The Relab 176 is a software recreation of a vintage 1960s 176-style tube compressor, modeled from the entire audio circuit. Every tube, transformer, timing network, and power supply interaction is emulated using a real-time circuit solver, preserving the original hardware’s tone, timing, and dynamic behavior. This is not a static transfer curve; the plugin simulates the actual electrical behavior, so compression emerges organically from the circuit.

The signal path includes an all-tube variable-gain stage, line amp, and input, output, and interstage transformers, all modeled for saturation and frequency shaping. The RC sidechain delivers program-adaptive attack and release, while power supply sag and recovery influence timing under sustained gain reduction. This holistic modeling ensures that the plugin responds to audio the way the hardware would, making it inherently musical and dynamic.

Adaptive Compression and Tone

The Relab 176 is a fixed-threshold, variable-gain design where ratio, drive, and source material interact to shape timing, curve, and harmonics. Four hardware ratios—2:1, 4:1, 8:1, and 12:1—change the knee position and slope, providing results from smooth leveling at low ratios to assertive limiting at high ones. Compression intensity adapts naturally to the input, ensuring nuanced dynamic shaping.

Program-dependent timing comes from RC networks directly coupled to the tube gain stage, so attack and release are influenced by signal level, transient size, tube nonlinearity, and transformer interaction, not fixed values. A Fixed/Auto toggle adjusts how release adapts to the program.

Flexible Circuit Paths and Calibration

The Stage Coupling switch offers two authentic circuit paths for the variable-gain tube stage to the output amp. The Transformer path introduces an interstage transformer for faster attack (potentially sub-millisecond), a subtle ‘smiley curve’ tone, and reduced low-end wobble. The Resistor path uses a resistor network for a slower attack, flatter tone, and more vintage-style low-frequency thump, letting you choose between speed and tone.

A single Calibration control shifts internal tube bias and balance, adjusting threshold, harmonic profile, and dynamic feel simultaneously—like moving multiple trim pots on the hardware. Clicking the Relab logo reveals advanced trims: 6BC8 bias, 6BC8 anode balance, 12AX7 bias, and a Reference Level control. These allow fine-tuning of threshold, harmonic mix, transient response, and low-frequency stability for precise gain staging and tone shaping.

Workflow Integration

The Relab 176 is designed for modern production across various sources. On vocals, it maintains presence while controlling dynamics, with harmonics scaling by level for depth without dulling articulation. On the mix bus, it offers gentle peak control for cohesion; transformer mode adds weight, while resistor mode keeps a cleaner tone.

In mastering, it provides smooth harmonics with precise gain control, and calibration plus reference level fine-tune headroom and harmonic profile. The polarity-selective detection is ideal for controlling plosives in vocals or kick attack without affecting other elements. The plugin’s authentic behavior makes it suitable for tracking, mixing, and mastering, delivering the nuance and musicality expected from a hardware 176.
