Core Dynamics Control

Pure Compressor v3 provides standard dynamics controls such as ratio, attack, and release, while extending beyond them with detailed envelope shaping. The attack, hold, and release parameters are fully adjustable, including a zero-attack option that uses a delay line in the signal path to eliminate the initial transient.

The compressor extracts real-time dynamics information, and you can amplify or diminish this signal with the Dynamic Factor control. The Dynamic Velocity setting adjusts how quickly the extracted dynamics respond to changes. Additionally, eight detection modes are available, including RMS-based options with adjustable integration times. Some modes are inspired by vintage hardware and use a feedback design that tends to produce a denser, more substantial sound.

Detection and Shaping Modes

The detection section interacts with the envelope and time settings to determine how the compressor responds to the input signal. The eight detection modes include options for RMS detection with selectable integration times, which are useful for smoothing out level variations. Dedicated feedback modes recreate the behavior of older analog compressors, where the envelope follows the output rather than the input, resulting in a characteristically solid low end.

The Dynamic Factor and Dynamic Velocity controls further shape the response by scaling and speeding up the extracted dynamics, respectively. This flexibility allows you to fine-tune the compressor’s reaction for anything from subtle leveling to aggressive pumping effects. The advanced release mode gives you precise command over how the gain reduction recovers after the signal drops, which is critical for maintaining a natural feel in complex material.

Stereo Width and Processing

Built-in mid-side encoding and decoding splits the stereo input into mid and side components, enabling precise stereo width adjustment. The width control lets you narrow the image by decreasing the side signal or widen it by increasing, though extreme widening may introduce phase issues. This feature works only when exactly two channels are processed, so it is tailored for standard stereo tracks.

The compressor also offers link channel functionality for either linked or unlinked processing in mid-side mode, giving you independent control over the center and sides. A true bypass routes the input directly to the output for a clean comparison between processed and unprocessed audio.

Practical Applications

The input and output gain controls, with their wide range, allow you to drive the compressor harder or compensate for level changes, making it suitable for both tracking and mixing. The external sidechain input, available in AAX Native and DSP as well as AU formats on supported systems, opens up frequency-sensitive compression when paired with the built-in three-band equalizer in the sidechain path.

For parallel compression, use the dry/wet control to blend the heavily compressed signal with the original, which is a common technique in rock and pop drum mixing. The internal peak limiter at the final stage smooths off any residual peaks, helping to prevent overs. In mastering, the mid-side width control can subtly enhance stereo imaging, while the advanced release modes help maintain a consistent loudness without audible pumping.
