Audio effects and utilities

A mastering and mixing plugin that recreates the sound of vinyl records, offering harmonic distortion, time modulation, and noise shaping for tracks or stereo buses.

Crane Song Peacock

Purpose

Peacock is designed to emulate the sonic character of vinyl records, bringing a classic, warm, and smooth quality to audio. It can be applied to a stereo bus to give an entire mix the feel of a record, or used on individual tracks like vocals or instruments to create a larger-than-life, fat sound while taming harsh harmonics.

The plugin is built around three primary controls – Harmonic, Dynamic, and Color – that work together to shape the distortion and coloration. The Color switch adjusts the interaction between these controls, setting the maximum amount of midrange and low-frequency coloration, as well as the high-frequency compression behavior. This makes it a versatile tool for adding vintage texture and smoothing out digital harshness.

Key Capabilities

The Harmonic and Dynamic controls interact to set the level of harmonic distortion, emulating the time-based modulation found in vinyl playback. This modulation stems from tracing and tracking distortion, which occur due to the physical differences between the cutter and stylus, and playback system misalignment. The Dynamic control modulates the distortion components in a frequency-dependent way, and its effect is level-dependent, requiring careful adjustment to find the optimal sweet spot.

A Dither control adds noise with a spectrum similar to record surface noise, modulating internal functions and adding dither to the audio path at a level suitable for 16-bit processing. The Color switch offers several settings—Silver, Gold, Rich, Fat, Deep—that progressively increase coloration, with Silver being the brightest and Gold closely matching a reference record and wave file.

Workflow

To use Peacock effectively, start by placing it on a stereo bus or an individual track. Begin with the Color setting that suits your musical context—Silver for a lighter touch, or Gold for a more authentic vinyl match. Adjust the Harmonic control to introduce the desired amount of distortion, then carefully set the Dynamic control, listening for the point where the time modulation becomes audible but not unpleasant; pushing it too far can create ugly sounds, which the plugin’s internal design prevents.

The Dither control can be engaged to add vinyl-like noise, which helps blend the effect with the original audio. The plugin is optimized for a sample rate of 96 kHz but works fine at other rates. Since the Dynamic control’s effect is level-dependent, experiment with gain staging to find the best response.

Practical Applications

Peacock excels in adding vintage character to modern recordings. On a stereo bus, it can give an entire mix a classic vinyl warmth, making it ideal for genres like lo-fi, hip-hop, or jazz that benefit from a retro feel. It is also useful for mastering, allowing you to subtly smooth out harsh frequencies and add a sense of cohesion.

On individual tracks, the plugin helps create large, fat sounds on instruments like bass, guitar, or synth, and can be used on vocals to achieve a smooth, vintage smoothness. Use it to soften digital harshness, add harmonic richness, or simulate the subtle time modulation of a record player. The Color and Dither controls allow for fine-tuning the level of coloration, making it a flexible tool for both subtle and dramatic effects.
