Audio effects and utilities

Snapper is a Mac utility that instantly previews audio files in the Finder, offering waveform display, playback, and drag-and-drop conversion for seamless integration into DAWs and editors.

Audio Ease Snapper

Purpose and Core Function

Audio Ease Snapper is designed for Mac users who work with audio files directly in the Finder. When you select an audio file, a wave form appears immediately beneath the current window, giving you a visual representation without opening a separate application. This eliminates the need to launch a DAW just to identify or preview a sound.

Playback is straightforward: press the space bar or double-click the wave form to hear the file. You can also enable auto-play to start sound the moment you select a file. Vari-speed playback is available for adjusting tempo without altering pitch, useful for quick evaluation.

Key Capabilities

Snapper excels at handling a wide range of audio formats. It opens over fifty sound file types, including compressed formats, split stereo files, high-resolution audio, surround sound files, CDs, and even videos with audio tracks. It also displays metadata such as loops, markers, timestamps, regions, BWF annotations, and album art.

For selection-based work, you can highlight a portion of the wave form and drag it out to create a new file, or drop it directly into any DAW, sequencer, or audio editor at the playhead. This streamlines moving snippets into your production environment.

Workflow and Conversion Tools

Snapper includes several conversion utilities. You can turn a selected audio region into an MP3 or M4A file, export to WAV (including Broadcast Wave format), or convert and attach to an email in one step. It can also split interleaved stereo files into separate left and right channel files, or merge them back together.

The tool integrates deeply with the Finder, following your file selection to update the wave form instantly. It also supports drag-and-drop into Pro Tools, Nuendo, Logic, Cubase, and Live, allowing you to place audio precisely at the cursor in these applications.

Metadata and Sound Library Search

Snapper adds an informer that communicates metadata from WAV files to macOS Spotlight. This includes Broadcast Wave Extensions (BEXT), copyright, creator, annotations, and comments. As a result, you can search for sound effects by their metadata directly in the Finder.

The tool also embeds the Universal Category System (UCS) to help you find synonyms and category explanations. It displays full category and subcategory names rather than abbreviations, making it easier to navigate and identify sound files. This feature requires macOS Mojave or later.
