Physion Mk II is a multi-effect plugin that splits audio into transient and tonal streams, allowing independent processing with Eventide’s effects for creative sound design and mixing.

Physion Mk II

Purpose and Core Concept

Physion Mk II is a multi-effect plugin that separates an audio signal into transient and tonal components, enabling independent processing of each. This approach provides a new level of control for mixing and sound design, as effects can be applied to only the percussive or sustained parts of a sound. It combines Eventide’s Structural Split technology with a suite of hand-tuned effects.

The plugin is designed for producers, mixers, and sound designers, offering a streamlined workflow. It includes a resizable GUI with a scrolling waveform display and a layout that avoids menu diving. The improved splitting detection from SplitEQ ensures accurate separation, while the ability to control the underlying split allows for fine-tuning and experimentation.

Key Capabilities and Effects

Physion Mk II offers seven transient effects: Delay, Tap Delay, Dynamics, Phaser, Reverb, Gate+EQ, and Reverse Delay. Eight tonal effects are also available: Delay, Dynamics, Pitch, Chorus, Reverb, Tremolo, EQ, and Reverse Delay. These effects are specifically tuned for their respective streams, ensuring optimal performance for both transient and tonal material.

New effects include a Polyphonic Pitch Shifting algorithm based on SIFT technology, and Reverse Delays with Gating, Ping-pong, and Crystals modes. A Side Chain input for dynamics processors is also featured. The plugin includes state-of-the-art filters taken from SplitEQ. Over 500 presets are included, organized into easy-to-navigate categories.

Workflow and User Experience

The plugin supports separate processing of transient and tonal streams, with independent output level controls for each. This allows users to blend the processed and unprocessed signals. The underlying split can be adjusted for fine-tuning, giving users precise control over how the signal is divided.

An A/B comparison feature and Undo/Redo make it easy to explore different settings without losing previous work. The interface includes three color schemes: Normal, Dark, and Colorblind Accessible. The preset library is organized by category, such as color, quick fixes, spaciousness, or deep transformation, facilitating quick sound selection.

Practical Applications

For mixing, the plugin can be used to add reverb to only the tonal part of a vocal while keeping the transients dry, or to apply dynamics to the transient stream of a drum bus. The gated reverse delay on tonal material can create rhythmic swells, while pitch shifting on transients can add unusual textures.

Sound designers can use the separate processing to create complex, evolving sounds. The polyphonic pitch shifting can be applied to a tonal pad, while a phaser on the transients adds movement. The Side Chain input allows dynamics to react to an external source, enabling creative pumping effects on either stream. The extensive preset library offers a starting point for various styles.
