Retronaut

Purpose and Core Sound

Retronaut is a multi-voice vibrato and chorus effect designed to evoke the character of vintage analog hardware. Its sound is inspired by bucket brigade chips, tape cassettes, vinyl records, and voltage-controlled filters. The plugin combines modulation with a suite of LoFi effects to create a nostalgic, aged audio character.

The core engine allows mixing from a single vibrato voice up to four, producing a lush, continuously variable chorus. This flexibility lets users find precise sweet spots between voices, from subtle detune to wide, rich textures. Beyond modulation, Retronaut includes a tape saturation stage that delivers a warm, compressed tone, shaping the overall sound.

Key Capabilities: Degrade and Diverge

Retronaut offers multiple ways to degrade audio, adding warmth, dirt, grit, wow and flutter, as well as dusty crinkles and crackles. These effects age the sound, imparting a nostalgic quality reminiscent of old recordings. The Diverge controls offset the voices in various ways to create organic, evolving movement.

Users can spread voices across the stereo field, apply progressive delays, warp phase, and independently offset the LFO rate for each voice. This creates dynamic and unpredictable textures. The combination of degradation and divergence allows for a wide range of LoFi aesthetics, from subtle tape warmth to heavily damaged, crackling sounds.

Workflow and Modulation

The heart of Retronaut is its modulation, but users can dial back the «Vibe» to use its other effects independently. The tape saturation alone can serve as a standalone effect, providing a woolly, compressed tone. The virtual analog filters—high-pass and low-pass with resonant 2 or 4-pole options—shape the effect’s tone and can be modulated by the LFO.

A unique feedback network, controlled by the Feed parameter, sends each voice’s signal into the others. Combined with Lag to delay voices and filters for damping, this creates a lush, modulated reverb-like effect. This feature is ideal for ambient or experimental sounds, offering breathtakingly beautiful textures.

Practical Applications and Ease of Use

In practical use, Retronaut excels on instruments like electric guitars, synths, and vocals, adding vintage character and movement. It can transform a dry mix into a nostalgic, tape-saturated bed. The feedback network enables expansive, reverb-like textures for ambient pads or sound design.

The plugin features a photorealistic 3D GUI that can be resized, and it uses licence files for activation—no dongle or internet required. It includes smart bypass to avoid clicks and an intelligent sleep mode to save CPU, making it practical for both studio and live use.
