A Kontakt instrument blending analog and wavetable synth sounds with a generative sequencer, user sample import, and deep sound design tools for evolving pads and rhythmic patterns.

Waverley Instruments Synthetic Materials

Core Sound Engine

Synthetic Materials is a Kontakt-based instrument built around a rich collection of modern analog and wavetable synthesizer sounds, captured in wide stereo for immersive textures. The factory library includes numerous instruments focused on long, atmospheric pads, plus a dedicated percussion instrument with a wide array of analog drum samples. All sounds are presented in a straightforward interface that emphasizes hands-on tweaking.

The instrument includes a set of filters with envelope and LFO control, a drive effect with its own envelope, and effects like EQ, delay, chorus, reverb, and compression. A pitch shifter can create additional notes for octave or chord effects, while variable pitch and velocity drift introduce analog-style instability. These features are all accessible from the main GUI or via NKS hardware.

Generative Sequencer

The step sequencer is designed for creative exploration, using a probability-based engine to generate evolving patterns that never repeat exactly. Up to sixteen steps are available per sequence, with adjustable step length ranging from a sixteenth note to several beats, allowing for both rhythmic loops and slowly shifting soundscapes. Velocity and gate are editable per step, and steps can be subdivided for ratcheting effects.

Unusual features include A/B options to mix alternative pitches, step assignments for direction shifts or chaos, and shift automation that transposes sequences automatically during playback. Scale quantization keeps everything in key, making it easy to sketch musical ideas without manual adjustments. The sequencer also includes a collection of ready-made patterns and demos to get started.

User Sample Integration

Synthetic Materials supports importing your own audio files, allowing you to use the same sample mapping and zone design as the factory sounds. You can drag and drop audio, adjust sample start and loop points, and save custom instruments as snapshots. This makes it simple to incorporate personal recordings or external sound sources into your patches.

Custom instruments can be shared with other users, fostering a community of tweaked and personalized sounds. The integration is straightforward, turning the instrument into a flexible sampler as well as a synth. This feature expands creative possibilities beyond the built-in factory content.

Workflow and Performance

Synthetic Materials is intended to be a hands-on tool for sound design and pattern generation. The single-screen GUI concentrates all parameter controls, reducing menu diving and keeping the creative flow uninterrupted. NKS integration allows control from compatible hardware, which is useful for live tweaking or studio sessions.

The instrument includes a variety of snapshots, sequencer demos, and multis that showcase layering and full arrangements. While the factory content is extensive, the real strength is in making each preset unique. Whether you’re building ambient pads, rhythmic sequences, or percussive loops, the workflow rewards experimentation and personalization.
