Tremolator is a beat-synced tremolo and rhythmic auto-gate effect that recreates vintage amp and electric piano sounds while adding modern MIDI sync and dynamic control.

Tremolator

Purpose

Tremolator emulates the tremolo effect of classic hardware, including a Fender Vibrolux guitar amp and a Wurlitzer electric piano. Soundtoys analyzed waveforms from vintage gear and recreated them with a custom LFO waveshape editor, giving each preset a distinct character. An Analog mode adds the texture of passing through analog hardware.

Beyond simple tremolo, it functions as a rhythmic auto-gate. Switching to a sharp square wave transforms it into a gate effect that can chop audio in steady or custom patterns. This dual nature makes it useful for both vintage-style guitar parts and modern remix production.

Key Capabilities

MIDI sync locks tremolo to tempo, allowing beat-synced pulses in note values like eighth or sixteenth notes. The Rhythm Editor lets users write custom patterns or select grooves from a library, with options for swing, shuffle, and accents. The Waveshape Editor can tighten or loosen gate time for precise control.

Dynamics controls in the Tweak menu let playing dynamics influence speed and depth. Louder or softer input can trigger speed-ups, slow-downs, or depth changes, such as increasing tremolo depth as chords fade. Presets in the Dynamics folder provide starting points that can be adjusted to fit musical contexts.

Workflow

For a straightforward tremolo, select a vintage waveform, adjust speed and depth, and enable Analog mode for character. To create rhythmic gating, choose a square wave, lock to MIDI, and set note divisions. For more complex patterns, open the Rhythm Editor to design custom grooves or pull a preset from the library.

Dynamics controls can be mapped to playing intensity for expressive effects. For example, setting speed to respond to input volume creates natural accelerations or decelerations. The Waveshape Editor refines gate transitions, making it possible to dial in tight or smooth chops. Presets provide a quick starting point for both tremolo and gate setups.

Practical Applications

Tremolator suits guitarists seeking classic amp-style tremolo for clean or overdriven tones. It also works well on electric piano to emulate Wurlitzer textures. For producers, the MIDI-synced auto-gate can rhythmically chop synths, vocals, or drums, adding movement to loops or breakdowns.

The Dynamics features enable performances that respond to touch, making it suitable for live playing or recording where intensity varies. Custom rhythms from the editor allow for groove-based gating that matches a song’s feel. The combination of vintage character and modern sync makes it a flexible tool in both studio and live contexts.

Key features

  • Emulates vintage tremolo from guitar amps and electric pianos
  • MIDI sync for beat-locked tremolo and gating
  • Programmable Rhythm Editor for custom patterns
  • Waveshape Editor to adjust gate and LFO shapes
  • Dynamics controls for speed and depth based on input
  • Analog mode for hardware-like texture

Best for

Guitarists and producers seeking authentic vintage tremolo or creative rhythmic gating. It is ideal for adding movement to guitar, electric piano, or synth parts, and works well in remix workflows that require MIDI-synced chops or dynamic, playing-responsive effects.
