DUNE 3 is a powerful synthesizer that combines virtual analog, wavetable, and FM synthesis within a single instrument. Its oscillator section features two stacks of multiple oscillators, a dedicated third oscillator, and a noise generator. The unison capability is extensive, with the ability to layer many voices per note, creating thick, detuned sounds reminiscent of classic supersaw leads.

The filter section has been redesigned as a dual multimode filter with several routing options. You can set the filters in series or parallel, and a balance knob lets you blend seamlessly between the two. New filter types include zero-delay feedback filters derived from analog modeling technology, which provide a more authentic vintage character.

Modulation and Arpeggiation

Modulation in DUNE 3 is deep and flexible. It includes four graphical multi-segment envelopes (MSEGs) that allow you to draw complex shapes with breakpoints, plus three low-frequency oscillators (LFOs). The modulation matrix lets you route any modulator to a wide range of synth and effect parameters, enabling creative movement beyond simple pitch and filter cutoff.

A major feature is the dual arpeggiator. Each unit is programmable independently and supports classic up/down patterns, as well as user-defined sequences and MIDI file playback. This lets you build complex rhythmic patterns by layering two different arps, each with its own direction, speed, and note value.

Effects and Wavetable Editor

The effects section has been expanded with new algorithms across all categories, including distortion, chorus, phaser, EQ, delay, and reverb. A standout addition is a professional four-band equalizer that also includes high and low cut filters with variable slopes. This EQ is designed to handle modulation without audible artifacts, meaning you can automate its bands for creative filter sweeps, not just corrective mixing.

The built-in wavetable editor is a powerful feature that sets DUNE 3 apart. You can create waveforms from scratch using free-hand drawing, line segments, a partial editor, or even by entering mathematical formulas. It also provides a range of processing tools such as morphing, fade in/out, normalize, DC removal, and invert/reverse.

Presets and Sample Playback

DUNE 3 comes with a substantial factory library that includes over a hundred patches, crafted by professional sound designers. Because it is fully patch-compatible with its predecessor, it also includes all of those presets as well, effectively doubling the size of the factory content. This provides a wide range of starting points for sound design, covering everything from analog-style bass lines to experimental textures and cinematic effects.

Since version 3.4, the instrument also supports loading WAV files directly into sounds via the third oscillator. You can import standard WAV files and set a loop region so the selected segment repeats continuously while a note is held. The editor allows you to adjust the loop points precisely, making it possible to create seamless loops from existing samples.
