This expansion brings the renowned acoustics of Nashville’s Blackbird Studios into Steven Slate Drums Trigger. Recorded in the spring of 2014 by studio founder John McBride with drummer Chris Tyrell, it draws on three of Blackbird’s eight rooms—including the chambers of A and D—to deliver a drum library steeped in vintage character.

Designed exclusively for Trigger Platinum or Trigger EX, the pack replaces or augments your existing drum samples with these new recordings. It is not a standalone instrument; you must own one of those Trigger versions to use it. The expansion focuses on capturing the natural ambience and subtle room reflections that made Blackbird a favorite for artists like Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen, giving your mixes a sense of space and realism that is hard to achieve with dry samples alone.

Key Drum Sounds Included

The library provides a carefully curated set of drum samples: six kick drums, ten snare drums, seven tom sets, two hi-hats, one ride cymbal, and four crash cymbals. Each sound was recorded in the studio’s rooms A, C, and D, using a mix of classic kits and vintage microphones. The kick drums offer depth and definition, while the snares range from tight and cracky to fat and ambient.

Cymbals were chosen to complement the drums, with hi-hats that cut through without harshness, a ride that provides clear stick definition, and crashes that bloom naturally. Because the samples were captured in the same rooms with the same chain, they blend seamlessly when mixed together.

Workflow and Integration

Using the expansion is straightforward for Trigger users. After installing, you load the new samples directly within Trigger’s interface, assigning them to your drum map. You can audition each sample in context with your existing kit, blending the Blackbird sounds with your current set or replacing them entirely. The samples are organized by type, so you can quickly find the kick, snare, or cymbal you need.

For mixing, the room ambience captured in these samples can reduce the need for external reverb, especially on drums. You might still add a subtle room reverb for glue, but the natural acoustics provide a solid foundation. The vintage character makes this pack ideal for rock, indie, and Americana, while the modern options can serve in pop or metal with careful processing.
