SSL X-Limit is an easy-to-use visual limiter for increasing loudness on tracks and buses without clipping, featuring multiple character settings, True Peak precision, and stereo imaging feedback.

SSL X-Limit

Purpose

SSL X-Limit is a visual limiter designed to increase loudness on individual tracks or mix buses while protecting against clipping. It combines an all-in-one waveform display with a threshold and ceiling slider, allowing you to set the limiter’s response directly against the incoming signal.

The limiter offers four preset styles—Transparent, Glue, Punch, and Auto—each adjusting the internal ballistics to deliver a different characteristic response. Transparent is suited for catching peaks on vocals or acoustic guitars, Glue helps unify a sub-group, Punch can smash a drum bus, and Auto adjusts time constants based on the transient content of the signal for a set-and-forget approach.

Key capabilities

X-Limit includes a standard-compliant True Peak algorithm with intelligent oversampling to effectively limit inter-sample peaks, ensuring precision processing. It provides momentary and max True Peak readouts to monitor the output. The plug-in also features unique Steering and Ducking meters that indicate how the limiting process might influence the stereo image, helping you minimize stereo degradation using the Channel Link control.

Additional workflow enhancements include Gain Lock to keep the output gain stable, I/O difference auditioning to compare input and output, Gain Match for easy level comparison, and a Mix control to blend the original signal back in. The Mix control is particularly useful when using X-Limit to add punch and character rather than purely controlling peaks.

Workflow

Begin by selecting a preset style that matches your material, then use the waveform visualizer to set the threshold and ceiling against the incoming signal. Dial in the gain to increase loudness while catching peaks, and adjust the Channel Link control to preserve the stereo image. The Steering and Ducking meters provide real-time feedback on how the limiting affects stereo position and perceived width.

For a transparent peak-catching role, use Transparent mode on vocals or acoustic guitars. For glue on a sub-group, Glue mode imparts cohesion. Punch mode is ideal for a drum bus where aggressive limiting is desired. Auto mode offers a hands-free option, automatically adapting to the transient content. Use the Mix control to blend the original signal for parallel-style processing, applying limiting as a character effect.

Practical applications

X-Limit is well-suited for mastering individual tracks or buses when you need to increase loudness without unwanted distortion. It can serve as a final safety limiter on a mix bus, catching stray peaks to prevent clipping. The various modes allow it to adapt to different sources, from subtle vocal control to aggressive drum bus treatment.

For sound design, the Punch mode can add impact to percussive elements, while the Glue mode can help create a unified sound across multiple instruments. The visual feedback and stereo meters make it a practical tool for engineers who need to understand how limiting affects the stereo image. Its low latency and intuitive interface support a streamlined workflow in mixing and mastering sessions.
