A multi-sampled grand piano instrument that blends three distinct piano types into one playable, effects-rich virtual instrument, with deep synthesis-style controls.

Nightfox Audio Grand Piano Suite

Purpose and Core Concept

Nightfox Audio Grand Piano Suite is a virtual instrument built around three contrasting piano sources, each captured in real spaces with multiple velocity layers. The core idea is to stack these pianos—a full concert grand in a large chamber, an upright with felt, and an electric grand through tube amps—into a single playable patch, creating hybrid tones that no single instrument can produce.

The instrument preserves the natural character of each piano while giving you synthesizer-like functionality. This combination is designed for producers and composers who want the authenticity of real pianos but with the flexibility to shape and blend them into new textures. The suite encourages experimentation, whether you use the sources individually or layer them for richer, more complex sounds.

Key Capabilities and Blending

Each of the three piano sources can be independently mixed using onboard faders, allowing precise control over the balance between the concert grand, felt upright, and electric grand. Per-instrument effects include pan, width, input delay, EQ, and compression, letting you sculpt each layer before it hits the main output. This staging is ideal for crafting detail in the mix.

Beyond mixing, the instrument offers global amplitude controls—attack, hold, decay, sustain, and release—plus a customizable filter with ten types and a visualizer. An arpeggiator with hold, latch, and MIDI thru modes, six patterns, and adjustable step size, rate, and swing provides rhythmic motion.

Workflow and Integration

The Grand Piano Suite is designed to fit into existing production workflows. It supports AU, AAX, VST3, and a standalone app, making it compatible with most major DAWs, though Garageband is not currently supported. All important parameters are automation-capable and CC-mappable, so you can record tweaks or control them from external hardware.

The included arpeggiator and step-based maps for velocity, note length, and pitch offset allow for complex, evolving patterns without manual sequencing. The five onboard effects—drive with eight types, phaser, chorus, delay, and reverb—provide a full signal chain, reducing the need for external processing. Over seventy presets are included, and you can save custom presets, making it easy to recall your favorite setups.

Practical Applications and Character

In a mix, the concert grand works well as a solo instrument or as a foundation for layering, while the felt upright adds a softer, more intimate tone for ballads or lo-fi tracks. The electric grand, with its direct and amp-miked signals, can cut through a dense arrangement or provide vintage warmth.

The flexible envelope, filter, and modulation options make it suitable for both traditional piano parts and sound design. You might use the arpeggiator to generate rhythmic pulses, or the LFOs to create subtle movement in textures. The standalone app allows quick sketching without a DAW, but the full parameter automation shines when composing in a larger project.

Key features

  • Three piano sources: concert grand, felt upright, electric grand with tube amps
  • Multiple velocity layers per key for natural dynamics
  • Per-instrument mixing faders and effects: pan, width, delay, EQ, compression
  • Global ADSR, customizable filter with ten types, and visualizer
  • Fully adjustable arpeggiator with six patterns and MIDI thru
  • Five additional effects: drive, phaser, chorus, delay, reverb
  • Three LFOs with six shapes and five portamento controls
  • Automation and CC mapping for key parameters, plus over seventy presets

Best for

Best for producers and composers seeking a versatile piano instrument that can move from pure acoustic tones to layered, effects-heavy hybrids. It is particularly useful for cinematic scoring, pop production, and sound design sessions where blending piano textures with synth-like control adds depth to arrangements without cumbersome routing.
