Modartt Pianoteq Instrument Pack: Harp

Purpose and Models

This instrument pack delivers two distinct harps, both physically modeled for realistic expression without sample libraries. The concert harp is based on a Salvi grand model, capturing the instrument’s resonant, un-damped sound. The Celtic harp is a new addition, strung with nylon in this model, producing a softer, more delicate tone than wire or gut strings.

Both instruments support pinch harmonics (flageolets) and glissandos. A diatonic mode with seven pedals allows pitch changes across all keys. The pack is designed for use within the Pianoteq environment, with the Celtic harp requiring a minimum version of 6.6.0.

Key Capabilities

The physical modeling technology aims to replicate the harp’s characteristic sound, including the sustain and complex resonances from the soundboard. The concert harp is played with fingertips on all strings, as in a real grand harp. The modeling captures the special magical quality arising from the lack of damped strings.

The Celtic harp model offers a contrasting timbre suitable for folk, early classical, and contemporary new-age music. Its softer attack and tonal character differ from the brighter concert instrument. Both harps include flageolets and glissandos for expressive techniques, and the pedal mechanism enables chromatic playing.

Workflow

Within Pianoteq, users can switch between the concert and Celtic harp models, adjusting performance parameters like pedal positions via MIDI automation. The seven-pedal diatonic mode functions similar to a harp’s pedal system, allowing key changes and glissandi. Players can use both hands for chordal or melodic passages.

For glissandos, the pedal can be set to create sliding effects across the strings. Flageolets, or pinch harmonics, are triggered by specific playing techniques. This workflow supports realistic harp compositions directly in your DAW, with live performance or step-wise MIDI editing.

Applications

The concert harp is suited for orchestral, classical, and film scores, evoking the romantic and impressionistic styles of Debussy, Wagner, or Tchaikovsky. Its grand sound also fits pop and rock contexts, as heard in works like The Beatles’ ‘She’s Leaving Home’ or Cher’s ‘Dark Lady.’

The Celtic harp is ideal for folk music, Renaissance-style pieces, and new-age soundscapes. Both instruments allow for solo pieces, accompaniment, and textural layers. The physical modeling makes them highly playable for expressive performances, whether for recorded production or live use within Pianoteq.
