Purpose and Heritage

Dulcius is a virtual instrument library built around the ancient dulcimer family, with the inaugural release focusing on a Persian Santur—one of the oldest dulcimer types. The samples were performed and recorded by musician Nuno Silva, capturing the instrument’s cultural authenticity. The library aims to make this traditional instrument playable and expressive via a MIDI keyboard, offering a tactile experience that mirrors the real thing.

Designed as a growing collection, Dulcius currently includes a single instrument but is planned to expand with more dulcimer varieties. These future additions will be delivered as a free upgrade for existing customers, making the initial purchase a gateway to a broader library. This approach encourages early adoption while ensuring that loyal users receive ongoing value without additional cost.

Key Capabilities

The Persian Santur was recorded with a focus on performance realism, capturing six idiomatic articulations that cover a wide expressive range. These include longs, damped, strike and mute, harmonics, dorab, and rizz (tremolo). All articulations except harmonics and damped were sampled at three dynamic levels, which can be triggered by note-on velocity, giving players nuanced control over intensity.

The rizz articulation supports dynamic crossfading via a continuous controller, allowing smooth transitions between tremolo intensities. Additionally, with the exception of rizz, every articulation includes two round-robin repetition samples. This is paired with a scripted repetition engine that generates endless note variations, effectively eliminating the machine-gun effect and providing a natural, human-like performance feel.

Workflow and Playability

The mapping and scripting of the samples were carefully designed to simplify performance on a MIDI keyboard. Players can switch between articulations seamlessly, using velocity to control dynamic layers, which makes the instrument responsive and intuitive for both live play and studio work. The inclusion of round-robin samples plus the variation engine ensures that repeated notes never sound identical, enhancing the authenticity of fast passages or ornamented melodies.

The rizz crossfade capability is particularly useful for crafting sustained, expressive lines, as it allows subtle or dramatic changes in tremolo speed without needing to change notes. This workflow suits various genres, from traditional Middle Eastern music to contemporary film scoring, where a convincing santur tone is required. The instrument’s design prioritizes playability, inviting musicians to explore its sonic possibilities directly from their keyboard.

Practical Applications

Dulcius is suited for composers, producers, and performers seeking authentic Persian santur sounds. It excels in creating realistic solo performances, from delicate, plucked phrases to vibrant tremolo passages. The articulation set, including harmonics and damped effects, allows for detailed musical storytelling, making it ideal for film, TV, and game soundtracks that require an evocative, ethnic instrument palette.

The round-robin engine and dynamic layering also make it valuable for rhythmic patterns and ornamentation, typical of Persian classical music. For music producers, the ability to control dynamics via velocity and crossface rizz with a controller streamlines the recording of expressive MIDI parts. While the library currently focuses on this single instrument, its planned expansion promises a broader dulcimer collection, further extending its creative applications.
