BFD Sphere — Free Download
BFD Sphere is a metal and hard rock expansion pack for BFD3, BFD Eco and BFD2, conceived by Tesseract’s Acle Kahney and recorded at London’s Sphere Studios with processed and natural kits.

Concept and Origin
BFD Sphere is an expansion pack for BFD3, BFD Eco and BFD2, crafted by Acle Kahney of Tesseract and 4D Sounds. It embodies Kahney’s ideal drum sound for modern metal and hard rock. The pack was recorded at London’s Sphere Studios before its relocation, with engineer Francesco Cameli, known for work with Bullet For My Valentine and Queen. Neve preamps were used throughout to add warmth and definition to the recordings.
The drums were tuned to complement the acoustics of Sphere’s live room and were performed by Jamie Postones (Tesseract) and Mike Malyan (Monuments), drummers respected for their powerful and precise playing. The result is a collection of kits that capture both natural acoustic detail and a forceful modern character, ready for contemporary production styles.
Kit Contents and Articulations
The pack includes two high-detail kits: a four-tom DW kit and a Vibe kit, along with a Ludwig Black Beauty snare drum. These drums were selected and tuned to suit hard rock and metal contexts. The included snare features only Hit and Rimshot articulations, which may limit certain performance styles like buzz rolls or cross-stick work.
All kits come with presets formatted for BFD3, BFD Eco, and BFD2, and use the factory BFD cymbal and hihat sounds. This integration allows you to mix and match within the BFD environment without needing additional expansion packs. The focus on core kit pieces and essential snare articulations keeps the library streamlined for its intended aggressive genres.
Natural and Processed Versions
A distinctive feature of BFD Sphere is its inclusion of both natural and mix-processed versions of the kits. The natural versions present the drums as recorded, with the live room ambience and tonal character intact. These suit producers who prefer to apply their own EQ, compression, and reverb during mixing.
The processed versions are designed to be dropped directly into metal and hard rock mixes, having been pre-treated to sound polished and aggressive out of the box. This saves time for producers working under deadlines or those who want a consistent heavy tone without extensive tweaking. The dual versions offer flexibility, allowing you to choose between raw sound or a finished footprint.
Workflow and Genre Fit
In BFD3, BFD Eco, or BFD2, load the presets to access the kit configurations. The natural versions are ideal for mixing from scratch, while processed ones serve as quick starting points. Given the drummers’ backgrounds and the recording setup, the pack is optimized for metal, hard rock, and adjacent styles like pop-rock, where punchy, defined drums are essential.
For a typical metal track, the processed kits can be inserted into a session with minimal adjustment. For more control, the natural kits allow you to shape the sound using your preferred plugins. The factory cymbals integrate seamlessly, and the simpler snare articulation set encourages crafting grooves and accents rather than complex rudimental patterns.
