A modular mastering chain modeled on the EMI TG12410 console from Abbey Road, offering EQ, compression, filtering, and stereo spread in a flexible, customizable signal flow.

Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain

Purpose and Heritage

The Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain plugin replicates the EMI TG12410 Transfer Console, a solid-state unit used in Abbey Road mastering suites since the 1970s. It brings the distinct tonal character of that hardware to your own mixes and masters, with a sound shaped by decades of acclaimed recordings.

Designed as a modular chain, it lets you build custom processing paths using individual modules. While intended for mastering on the master bus, it also works on individual tracks or groups in a mixing session, offering the same ‘TG magic’ wherever you place it.

Modular Components and Flexibility

The plugin is built from interchangeable cassettes: an input module, a tone (EQ) module, a compressor/limiter module, a filter module, and a V.A.L. spread module integrated into the output. You can enable, disable, and reorder the processing modules to shape your chain, then use each module independently on different tracks or buses.

The compressor offers two modes: Original, which is ‘aggressive and dirty’ like the 1970s unit, and Modern, a new design based on TG topology for cleaner results with higher perceived loudness. A 48 dB/octave linear-phase sidechain filter gives precise control over the compressor’s response.

Metering and Monitoring Modes

A separate Meter Bridge plugin provides visual feedback for all TG Mastering Chain instances in your session via a drop-down selector. It shows VU, PPM, phase, and peak levels at a glance, allowing you to monitor your chain without opening each instance.

The plugin includes multiple processing modes—Stereo, Duo, and MS—as well as monitoring modes like Stereo, Mono, L/R, and M/S. This flexibility helps you check mono compatibility, balance, and mid/side detail, which is especially useful in mastering.

Workflow and Applications

In a mastering session, you can use the full chain on the master bus, adjusting modules to suit the material. For mixing, insert individual modules across different tracks or group buses—for example, a compressor on drums or EQ on a vocal—without committing to the whole console.

The plugin is available in a Live component, making it suitable for live sound as well as studio work. Whether you’re shaping a single instrument or polishing a full mix, the flexible routing and metering options support precise, creative decisions.
