VSL Studio Dimension Brass I

Authentic Ensemble Sound

This library captures four brass ensembles: trumpets, French horns, tenor trombones, and a low brass group, totaling sixteen players. Each musician was recorded with a dedicated microphone, allowing you to access and adjust individual instruments in real time while playing a full ensemble preset. You can alter sound characteristics, volume, articulations, and even performance accuracy on the fly.

The key to its realistic sound lies in the subtle imperfections of live ensemble playing. The humanize presets let you control how tightly or loosely the players perform together, from perfectly synchronized to more relaxed and human. This real-time control over interaction and intonation brings a natural, breathing quality to your brass sections, making them feel like a live group rather than a single synthesized instrument.

Expanded Articulations

Building on the original Vienna Dimension Brass I, this version adds new articulations for greater expression. Performance glissandos extend up to a tritone for trombones and an octave for trumpets and French horns, and they can be smoothly combined with legato passages. Medium sustained notes come in six dynamic layers, unlooped, with a natural decay, allowing for realistic crescendos and diminuendos.

You can crossfade between dynamic layers using a continuous controller, moving from soft, mellow tones to assertive, bright brass colors seamlessly. Recorded crescendos and diminuendos of one, two, and three seconds add realism to long phrases, while new long portatos fill the gap between short and sustained notes. This variety gives you the tools to craft expressive, nuanced performances without constantly switching patches.

Vienna Synchron Player Integration

The library runs on the free Vienna Synchron Player, which offers efficient streaming and a user-friendly interface. You can trigger short notes, portatos, sustains, glissandos, repetitions, and different dynamics simply by moving one or two preconfigured controls, minimizing the need for manual articulation switches. This streamlined workflow lets you focus on playing and musical expression.

The player includes a convolution reverb derived from Vienna MIR Pro, specifically tailored to recreate the ambience of Synchron Stage Vienna’s main hall. This allows you to blend the dry samples with the stage’s natural reverberation in real time, giving you a production-ready sound straight away. The reverb and placement presets are customized for each ensemble group, ensuring a cohesive and immersive soundstage.

Practical Applications

This library is ideal for film, TV, and game scoring, where you need realistic brass ensembles with the flexibility of individual instrument control. The authentic ensemble sound and humanize features make it perfect for creating believable section performances, whether for epic climaxes, intimate passages, or complex contemporary writing. The extensive articulation set supports everything from swells and falls to tight rhythmic stabs.

The ability to adjust each player individually allows you to balance the section, create custom blends, or even feature a single instrument within the ensemble. The included ambience presets ensure that parts sit naturally in a mix, especially when combined with other Synchron Series products. Whether you’re working on a detailed mockup or a final master, this library provides a polished, professional brass sound with minimal effort.
