MNTRA Huracan — Free Download
MNTRA Huracan is a sample-based virtual instrument for winds and percussion, drawing on Mesoamerican and Andean cultural sounds. It includes rare instruments and custom effects, powered by the MNDALA engine.

Purpose and Inspiration
Huracan by MNTRA is a virtual instrument that explores winds and percussion inspired by Mesoamerican and Andean cultures. It is built around the concept of an alternate timeline where ancient musical traditions evolved alongside electronic instruments. The sounds are sourced from the personal collection of founder Brian D’Oliveira, reflecting a deep connection to South and Central American heritage.
The instrument is named after the K’iche’ Maya god of wind, storm, and fire. It offers a curated palette of rare acoustic instruments, including prehispanic whistles, ocarinas, and flutes, alongside percussion. These are sampled with high fidelity and presented in a playable form, allowing composers to integrate unique cultural timbres into their work.
Key Capabilities
Huracan includes over forty presets and sixteen individual instruments, covering winds like the Mihuioti whistle, quena, double chamber flute, skull ocarina, and Palo de Canto. Percussion includes bamboo hits, ceremonial shakers, guiro, and gourd or metal Hom-Pax hits. Each instrument features up to three dynamic layers and twenty round robins, providing natural variation.
Three blendable microphone channels—close, far, and vintage—allow tonal shaping. Three custom effects (auto panner, harmonic tremolo, metallic verb) add movement and space. The MNDALA engine supports high-resolution sampling, and the intuitive three-axis control system lets you map a controller once for all plugins, simplifying performance.
Workflow and Performance
In a workflow, you load Huracan as a plugin in your DAW, then choose presets or individual instruments. The three-axis control system is central: assign any MIDI controller to these axes to manipulate timbre, dynamics, or effects in real time. This allows expressive shaping without menu diving, ideal for live performance or studio sessions.
The interface is animation-driven, with hover interactions that respond visually. The effects can transform acoustic sources into synths and textures, while the natural air and pitch fluctuations add organic variation. For composers, you can layer winds with percussion, blend microphone channels, and use effects to create cinematic or ambient soundscapes.
Practical Applications
Huracan suits film scoring, game audio, and world music production. Its unique timbres work well for cultural scenes, adventure cues, or any project seeking organic, non-Western sounds. The custom effects allow you to push instruments into otherworldly territories, making it versatile for experimental electronic music.
To get the most, start with presets to understand the palette, then explore individual instruments. Use the three-axis controls to modulate filter or effects, and blend microphones to place sounds in space. The flute and whistle variations—short, long, flutter—offer articulation options, while percussion adds rhythmic drive.
