MNTRA The Dark Tower — Free Download
The Dark Tower is a percussive virtual instrument built from recordings inside a decommissioned grain silo, capturing its natural reverb and metallic textures for cinematic and industrial music.

Origin and Concept
The Dark Tower is a percussive virtual instrument created from recordings inside a towering, decommissioned grain silo. This multi-story concrete structure, with its cylindrical chambers and weathered metal infrastructure, served as a natural reverb chamber. The instrument captures the silo’s unique acoustics, where sounds travel through several stories, generating delays and reverberations that are difficult to replicate artificially.
The recording process involved exploring the silo’s interior, finding sources like massive metal sheets, resonating staircases, and ventilation shafts. Each strike became a conversation between the performer and the architecture, yielding sounds that blend industrial percussion with ambient sculpture. This is the first installment in the Microfield Recording Series, aiming to bring rare, architectural textures into music production.
Key Capabilities
The instrument includes fifty-two Atelier presets and thirty sample maps, all powered by SSM (Sample Spectral Morphing) technology. The samples are recorded at high resolution, ensuring detailed playback. Up to eight round robins provide variation, making each hit feel organic and less repetitive.
The samples include dry and resonated versions of sounds like echoing metallic strikes, hand claps, and hits on metal lids, ventilators, and staircases. These are designed to be flexible, allowing users to blend the dry attack with the silo’s natural resonance. The presets offer a range of tonal colors, from soft metallic hits to saturated, harmonic-rich impacts.
Workflow in MNDALA 2
The Dark Tower is designed to be used within MNDALA 2, a companion platform that hosts the instrument. MNDALA 2 provides a sequencer and live effects, allowing users to sequence the percussive sounds and apply real-time processing. The X, Y, and Z macro axes enable dynamic shaping, letting performers modulate parameters across three dimensions.
These macros are essential for transforming the raw percussive hits into evolving textures or synthesized-like tones. For example, you can map a macro to control filter cutoff or reverb send, creating movement within a pattern. The sequencer can trigger round robins to add human feel, while the live effects can further color the sound, making the instrument suitable for both rhythmic and ambient applications.
Practical Applications
The Dark Tower is ideal for trailer music composers seeking massive impacts and tension-building elements. Its deep, resonant metallic hits can punctuate dramatic moments. For film scorers, the instrument offers a dark ambient palette that can underscore suspense or unease, with the silo’s reverb providing a sense of vast, empty space.
Electronic and industrial producers will find the percussive sounds easy to integrate into their tracks. By modulating the macros, you can morph simple hits into complex, evolving percussion beds or use the ambiences as atmospheric pads. The instrument also suits experimental music, where its unique textures can be explored as raw material for sound design.
