Oxford SuprEsser — Free Download
A precision dynamic EQ that targets and tames problem frequencies across the full audio spectrum, using a frequency-conscious compressor with simple controls and visual feedback.

Purpose and Core Concept
Oxford SuprEsser is a dynamic equalizer designed to control problematic frequencies with a frequency-conscious compressor. Instead of applying a static EQ cut, it triggers gain reduction only when a specific frequency band crosses a user-set threshold. This results in a gentler, more natural response, particularly useful for de-essing vocals without dulling the entire track.
The processor operates across the full 20Hz to 20kHz range, extending its utility beyond sibilance. A clear FFT display and three listen modes let you hear and see where issues lie before dialing them out. Auto Level Tracking adjusts the threshold relative to input energy, ensuring consistent processing whether a vocal is quiet in a verse or louder in a chorus.
Key Capabilities and Modes
Two operating modes are provided: a simple mode for quick fixes and an advanced mode for finer control. The simple mode streamlines the workflow, letting you identify and attenuate a frequency with a single control. Advanced mode opens up additional parameters for more precise tuning, suitable for complex material.
A wet/dry control enables quick parallel processing, allowing you to blend the processed and unprocessed signals. This feature is handy for retaining some of the original character. The dynamic behavior is linear phase, which preserves the phase relationship of the audio, making it transparent even when aggressive frequencies are targeted.
Workflow and Practical Use
Typical workflow involves first using the FFT display and listen modes to locate a frequency that becomes harsh when the signal peaks, like a nasal tone in a vocal or an edgy resonance in a guitar. Set the threshold so the process only kicks in when that frequency crosses it, then adjust the ratio and attack to taste.
This tool excels in mastering or mixing where a fixed EQ would unevenly alter the timbre. For de-essing, it can focus on sibilance without overprocessing. The Auto Level Tracking is beneficial for dynamic sources, such as a vocal that fluctuates in level, ensuring consistent gain reduction regardless of input loudness.
Compatibility and Limitations
The plug-in is native only, supporting AAX Native, AU, VST2, VST3, and RTAS formats. It requires a free iLok account and iLok License Manager; both iLok Cloud and iLok USB are supported. Each license provides two activations, allowing use on multiple machines.
System requirements are MacOS 10.7 Lion through 11 Big Sur (Intel only) and Windows 7 and above. An optimized AAX DSP version, SuprEsser DS, is available separately. Note that the native version does not support DSP, and the supplied Mac requirements specify Intel processors.
Key features
- Linear phase dynamic EQ for transparent control
- Operates 20Hz to 20kHz beyond simple de-essing
- Three listen modes plus FFT display for analysis
- Auto Level Tracking adapts to input energy
- Wet/dry mix for parallel processing
- Simple and advanced modes for different needs
Best for
Best for mixing and mastering engineers needing surgical de-essing or resonance control without the artifacts of static EQ. Ideal for vocals, acoustic instruments, and full mixes where a natural, phase-coherent response is desired, especially when dealing with dynamic level changes.
