Mastering The Mix CARBON Q

Purpose and Core Concept

CARBON Q is a mixing plugin designed to address two key aspects of a professional-sounding track: the relative loudness of each part and how their equalization fits together. It groups your mix into four main elements—vocals, music, drums, and bass—and places an instance on your output and each of these channels.

The connected workflow means adjustments are made with the entire mix in mind, rather than treating each track in isolation. By analyzing the busiest section of your song, CARBON Q can suggest presets that set both tonal balance and volume balance across all channels simultaneously. It aims to streamline the mixing process by providing a unified view and control surface for the core elements of a track.

Analysis and Smart Presets

To use the analysis feature, loop the busiest part of your song and press ANALYZE. Then press GO, and CARBON Q will analyze your mix. It compares your song against world-class reference mixes and places the ten closest matches at the top of the preset browser.

You can also turn any song you love into a preset by dropping it into the reference tracks tab. CARBON Q separates the record into vocals, music, drums, and bass, measures the tonal balance of each part and how loud each sits against the rest, then converts all that information into a preset.

Flexibility and Control

CARBON Q offers flexibility in applying references. You can select a reference and have the plugin apply both EQ and volume changes to match its sonic blueprint. Alternatively, you can unlink the ‘agents’ to take just the vocal balance from one song and the drums from another, giving you custom combinations. This modular approach lets you cherry-pick characteristics from different references.

To ensure objectivity, CARBON Q features level-matched EQ, holding the output steady in real time while you work. This prevents the common illusion that louder sounds better. Additionally, mid-side mode gives you control over the space and depth of your mix, with yellow representing mid and blue representing side. You can click between the two EQ lines to switch instantly.

Workflow, Performance, and Practical Use

In a typical workflow, you would load CARBON Q on your master output and on the four channel groups—vocals, music, drums, and bass. After connecting them, you loop a dense section of your song and run the analyzer to get preset suggestions. You can then audition these presets, which set both EQ and levels across all channels, and tweak individual channels from the same window.

For more targeted matching, you can import a reference track and let CARBON Q generate a preset from it, then apply it fully or partially by unlinking agents. The plugin is designed to be fast and transparent, using maximum quality linear phase filters. Compared to a leading linear phase EQ at its maximum resolution, the frequency response matches closely, but with significantly lower latency.
