A bus compressor and saturator for mixing, offering compression, saturation, sidechain control, and spatial tools to glue stem and mix buses while retaining clarity.

Softube Bus Processor

Purpose and design

Softube Bus Processor is a channel strip for bus processing, designed to add musical glue to any stem, folder, or mix bus. It combines a compressor, saturator, sidechain, and spatialization tools in a single interface, aiming to reduce the need for multiple plugins. The compressor section is inspired by classic large-format console bus compressors, offering control over gain reduction behavior for either transparent or colored results.

The saturation section includes an emphasis filter and can be placed before or after the compressor. The spatial section adds air and stereo width, with a mono bass filter for low-end control. The layout is intended to be intuitive, allowing for advanced routing and processing without a steep learning curve.

Compression and sidechain

The compressor provides a wide range of controls for shaping dynamics. Attack time can be set from very fast to moderately slow, while release offers both manual and automatic modes, with the auto mode using dual fast and slow stages. The ratio is adjustable from a gentle minimum to a more aggressive maximum, allowing for both subtle and heavy compression.

A variable stereo link lets you switch between full channel linking and dual-mono operation. The sidechain includes a low-cut filter with a variable tilt, plus external sidechain input support. For tempo-synced effects, the release can be locked to the DAW’s tempo, from sixteenth notes up to a full bar. A wet/dry blend control allows for parallel compression, useful for preserving transients while adding density.

Saturation and spatialization

The saturator offers two distinct modes, each providing a different flavor of harmonic coloration. It includes emphasis and de-emphasis filters to shape the frequency response of the saturation. The processing order can be flipped, so saturation can occur before or after the compressor, giving you flexibility in how the two stages interact.

The spatial section goes beyond typical width controls. It includes a variable high-frequency boost that works independently on mid and side channels, allowing you to add air to the sides or the center. Stereo width can be boosted or cut by adjusting the side channel level. A mono bass filter from off to a specified frequency ensures low-end compatibility, keeping kick and bass centered while widening the upper frequencies.

Workflow and applications

Bus Processor is designed for mixing workflows, particularly on stem buses like drums, vocals, or instruments, and on the final mix bus. Using it on buses helps glue individual tracks together, creating a cohesive sound. With conservative settings, it can add finish and polish without drastic coloration. It can also be used more aggressively for creative effects, such as parallel compression or saturation-heavy processing.

The plugin can be used as a native plugin in your DAW, or within the Console 1 Mixing System, where the compressor maps to the compressor section and the saturator to the output drive section. This integration makes it a good fit for producers using a hybrid hardware-software setup.

Key features

  • Compressor with attack, release, ratio, and stereo link controls
  • Auto release mode with dual fast and slow stages
  • Saturation with two modes, emphasis filters, and pre/post placement
  • Spatial tools: air filter, stereo width, and mono bass filter
  • Sidechain with low-cut, tilt filter, and external input support
  • Tempo-synced release and wet/dry blend
  • Console 1 integration for compressor and saturator sections

Best for

Best for producers and engineers who need a single bus processor that combines compression, saturation, and spatial shaping. It is ideal for mixing stem buses, such as drums or vocals, or the master bus, especially when aiming for a glued, polished sound that retains clarity and can be adjusted from transparent to colorful.
