The tool combines an RMS stage for gentle shaping and a Peak stage for transparent transient shaving, offering more than simple analytical clipping.

The design includes anti-aliasing techniques, such as multiple stages of oversampling, to minimize unwanted artifacts. An analog color control introduces even-order harmonics to alter the tonality of the clipped signal, enabling creative decisions about the sound’s vibe. Clipper is integrated with the Console 1 Mixing System, enhancing workflow for users of that platform.

Key Capabilities

The Peak stage works like a limiter with an infinitely fast attack and release, effectively shaving transients. When used gently in mastering, it provides a more cohesive sound. The RMS stage shapes material before peak clipping, remaining transparent at lower settings and breaking into thick distortion when pushed harder. This allows for increasing apparent loudness and creating tonal color.

The Analog Color control increases even-order harmonics generated by the RMS stage. Combined with headroom adjustment and low and high frequency controls, users can target specific frequency areas for distortion. This is useful for shaping the character of individual elements like an 808 or a drum bus, allowing for creative distortion beyond standard clipping.

Workflow Integration

Clipper is designed for straightforward use in a mixing or mastering chain. For mastering, you might insert it after your mix bus effects to catch stray transients before a final limiter, allowing the limiter to work less and preserve overall loudness. For single tracks, such as synths, it can be used to excite the sound by adding harmonic distortion and controlling peaks simultaneously.

Within the Console 1 Mixing System, Clipper can be integrated as part of the channel strip, allowing for seamless control and recall within that environment. The dual-stage design encourages experimentation: you can start with subtle RMS shaping and peak clipping, then introduce analog color to taste, tweaking the frequency controls to focus distortion where it best serves the material.

For a drum bus, applying analog color with low frequency focus can thicken the sound and give it a cohesive, aggressive edge. On synths, gentle peak clipping can add brightness and control without heavy compression.

For mastering, the RMS stage can be used to increase apparent loudness transparently, while the peak stage shaves off remaining overshoots, resulting in a louder, more cohesive master.
