Purpose

T-RackS Stealth Limiter is designed for the final peak limiting stage in mastering, aiming to increase loudness without the typical artifacts of compression, such as pumping or flattening of dynamics. Unlike traditional limiters that use look-ahead envelope-based compression, this processor employs a smart level-tracking algorithm that reduces levels below the ceiling moment-by-moment, preserving the perceived dynamic range and emotional impact of the music.

The processor is particularly effective for modern music delivery, where audio is often played back on various devices and services using lossy compression formats. By predicting the analog waveform during conversion, the limiter ensures that inter-sample peaks do not exceed the set ceiling, reducing the risk of distortion during playback. This focus on transparent loudness makes it suitable for genres where clarity and punch are paramount, from pop to rock to electronic music.

Key Capabilities

The limiter offers four operating modes, each tailored for a different mastering purpose. The default Tight mode is the most neutral, respecting the source material’s natural dynamics even at high limiting settings. Balanced mode allows for a subtle amount of dynamic compression, often desirable in louder masters. Harmonics 1 and Harmonics 2 add harmonic coloration and analog character, with the latter providing more grit and punch for mixes that need extra energy.

An advanced inter-sample peak-limiting algorithm is the core feature, predicting the converted analog waveform to prevent distortion from peaks that occur between samples. The interface includes an input knob for setting desired loudness and an output ceiling knob to control the final level. A unity gain monitoring function allows listening to the processed audio without the volume increase, facilitating A/B comparison to avoid the ‘louder is better’ trap.

Workflow

The workflow is straightforward: set the input level to achieve the desired loudness, then adjust the output ceiling to meet your target. For most mixes, starting with the Tight mode provides a transparent result that remains clean even when pushed hard. If you need subtle dynamic control, switch to Balanced mode; for added warmth or grit, engage the Harmonics modes.

The infrasonic filter is useful for cleaning up sub-bass content that can waste headroom, especially in bass-heavy material. During mastering, engage this filter if you notice the limiter is working harder than necessary due to low-frequency energy. Once settings are adjusted, the procesor ensures that inter-sample peaks stay within limits, giving confidence that the final masters will translate well across various playback systems.

Practical Applications

T-RackS Stealth Limiter excels in mastering sessions where transparency is key. It is suitable for finalizing tracks for streaming services, where loudness normalization is common but distortion is undesirable. For acoustic or classical music, the Tight mode preserves the delicate dynamics while providing a safe ceiling. In pop or rock productions, the Harmonics modes add analog-like character, making the mix feel more vibrant without the harshness of brickwall limiting.

The unity gain monitoring is invaluable for critical listening; it helps engineers make informed decisions about loudness versus quality. The four modes allow for experimentation: you can compare the neutral vs. colored presentations to find the right fit for the material. The infrasonic filter is a practical tool for cleaning up rumble in live recordings.

Key features
