Purpose

Mic Room is a T-RackS module that lets you re-voice audio recorded with a physical microphone to sound as if it were captured by one of over 20 modeled microphones, including dynamic, condenser, and ribbon types. It is designed for music producers and engineers who want the flexibility of a large mic locker without the expense or space.

The module also includes less conventional and creative mic models, offering unusual textures for sound design. Its core function is to enhance the versatility of your existing microphone collection. Instead of needing multiple physical mics, you can record with what you have, then apply Mic Room to shape the tone.

Key Capabilities

Each mic model aims to replicate the frequency response, character, and harmonic complexity of its physical counterpart. Tube condensers deliver rich saturation, dynamics offer a present and direct tone, and ribbons provide a smooth, velvety sound. The proximity effect control simulates the bass boost that occurs when a source is close to the microphone, adding depth for a ‘radio vocal’ feel, or you can cut low frequencies by turning it counterclockwise.

The harmonic content adjustment adds saturation and texture, giving lifeless tracks extra warmth and personality. Both controls can be pushed to extremes for unusual, creative effects. You can select the original microphone used for the recording from any of the available models, then choose a target model to re-mike the audio.

Workflow

To use Mic Room, place it on individual tracks in your DAW that contain microphone-recorded audio, such as vocals, acoustic guitar, or drums. After inserting the module, select the microphone that was actually used to capture the original audio; all modeled mics are available as source options. Then, pick a new microphone model to transform the recording’s character to match the desired tone.

For best results, apply the module to a single track rather than a mix bus, so the re-miking effect is focused. You can fine-tune the input level using the gain knob and monitor via the level meter. After setting the source and target mics, adjust the proximity and harmonic controls to taste. The bypass switch lets you A/B the original and processed sound.

Practical Applications

Mic Room is ideal for vocalists who record with a basic dynamic mic but want a condenser-like tone for a polished track. You can also use it to add lo-fi grit to overly clean recordings by choosing a colored model. For acoustic guitars, re-miking can match the instrument’s body to the mix.

The module also suits sound designers seeking unusual textures. Pairing it with IK Multimedia’s iRig line of microphones (such as iRig Mic Studio, iRig Mic HD, or iRig Mic) offers a plug-and-play experience: select the mic, connect it, and choose a virtual model. For best analog conversion, connect your mic to an iRig Pro or iRig Pro DUO interface.
